My iPhone 7 has iOS 15.6 and my MacBook Air has Big Sur 11.6.7, and I got the notice that I need a software update to connect the phone. I had tried installing Monterey but was told that there isn't enough space on the hard drive. Any advice besides the obvious (make room on the hard drive and install Monterey)?

If you see "Software update is required to connect to your iOS device" on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch explains that the "software update" notice you are receiving is not a system update, or upgrade. You are only downloading software which allows the current system to communicate properly with your iPhone. Monterrey is not required to solve your problem, just download and install the update as advised.

Concur with your observation. The advisory could be more descriptive, as stated in the Support Article: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch has a newer version of iOS than is supported by your Mac, you may see this alert: "A software update is required to connect to your iOS device. Would you like to download and install this update now?"
