How to remove an incorrect email

My iPhone somehow has an incorrect email in its system, it’s a slight variation of my correct email that I’ve had for more than 15 years. I keep getting a message to verify my email. When I try to do that it requests me to enter the password for the incorrect email, which I can’t do. If I select “forgot password” it wants to send a link to the incorrect email which of course I can’t access. I’ve been trying to resolve this for about 3 years-(which is how long I’ve had the iPhone). Does anyone have a suggestion on how to remove this incorrect email address. Thanks

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 15

Hi,

Attempt to sign in with the Apple ID email on https://appleid.apple.com/. You should receive a pop-up that wants you to confirm the email address again; click 'Can't Use this Email' and enter the new, correct email. You will have to confirm a verification code sent to the new email before it can be used as your Apple ID.
