Taking photos in 16:9

When taking photos using the 16:9 aspect ratio, does the phone keep a copy of both 16:9 and 4:3 resolution photos? When I plug my iPhone 13 Pro into my Windows 10 laptop, I get the option to copy across both formats.

My bigger worry here is that every photo taken in 16:9 has a 4:3 copy too and is therefore using almost twice the amount of memory it needs to?

Thanks!

Hi Avantgarde_RR,

We understand that you have concerns about the storage space when taking photos in 16.9. You are able to make the default settings 16:9 in order to avoid a 4:3 copy. If the default settings are not changed, the iPhone will revert to keeping both 16:9 and 4:3 copies. This discussions on a similar issue should help.

How do I make 16:9 as a default setting?

Have a nice day.

Thanks for taking the time to share those links - I read through them and couldn't find an answer.

"Even when you are taking the photos at a 16:9 aspect ratio, the sensor will record the photo at 4:3 and and the camera.app will just crop the photo. The sensor is 4:3, so the photo will be taken as 4:3 and then cropped."

if you revert it to the original it will be 4:3

I did see this but it doesnt quite say whether 2 copies are kept or not and therefore using twice as much space? Two copies do appear in Windows Explorer.

My other thought is that the iPhone is smart and powerful enough to give both options 'on the fly' when plugging the phone into a laptop and then defaulting back to having only one copy?
