Restore an older version of a note in Apple Notes (with Time Machine?)

I need to retrieve an older version of a note in Apple Notes.

My go-to solution for past versions of my data is, of course, Time Machine.

However, that seems to not work for Notes? At least not the way it works for documents and mails.

Does anybody know how I can restore older notes from my Time Machine backup?

I did more research, and it seems that of the backup solutions I have found, they all suffer the same protection gap of restoring older versions of a note. 😢

Even using versioning apps like Subversion, which are meant to cover exactly the scenario, that one has to return to an older version, struggle to retrieve an older note in the Notes app.

The reason lies in how the Notes app stores user data: It's in a monolithic database file.

That makes backing up and versioning individual notes really hard for backup applications, since they all work very much file based.

Product Feedback done.

Afaik Apple also reads the discussions here. So doubling down.

Frankly, it seems a major oversight to me, that the Notes app has been expanded so much over the last years but nobody at Apple considered whether Notes plays along with Time Machine.

That‘s what Apple is usually good at: Making sure that all parts in the ecosystem play well together.

It happened for the Mail app, when Time Machine was introduced: The storage was changed to be one file per mail, so it works well with Time Machine.

Accidental or otherwise undesired modifications are effectively data loss for the user – self-inflicted data loss, but data loss nonetheless, and a common occurrence, too. Time Machine‘s versioning usually protects against that, but not for Notes. 😕

Having a backup plan is what started this. 😉

I have various threats to my data in mind, like media failure, theft, disaster and … user error. 🤷‍♂️

For that I use different software and backup storage (which is more than an average user does).

My primary protection against user error like accidental deletion / modification is Time Machine.

I think TM is designed that way, allowing users to go back in time and restore older versions of their documents and mails.

Except for a key app like Notes it does not work. That's the issue.

I was hoping that I have overlooked something, but it seems that indeed TM has a protection gap for Notes compared to other documents, mails, …

As noted, I have sent my product feedback to Apple. Still useful, I think, to have it in the forum?

May I suggest reconsidering the assertion " Afaik Apple also reads the discussions here. So doubling down. "

Yes the Moderators of Apple are present and around on the Forums. Checking we all are abiding by the Rules of these Forums but as for reading users comments for Feedback or Improvements - not so.

As for the extent of TM Backup ability to restore data. It is good but IMHO I do not rely on only TM Backups.

Perhaps, below is over kill for some but has been a life saver in some instances for myself

Do you have a Rescue Plan In-Place. This comprises having 3 Backups using 2 methods and 1 Off Site incase of Theft, Loss or Natural Disasters. A Time Machine Backup  is very useful,

For addition purposes - two Tested Clones each to separate external drives. This is insurance incase the upgrades goes sideways. At least one Tested Clone and / or Time Machine Backup should be Off - Site
