Why are some contact icons dark grey in messages on mac
Is there a reason why some of my contacts have dark grey icons, rather than the light grey? Does it mean anything?

We'd like to help you find out what that means, as we were also unable to find an answer. We'd like to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:
- In which app was that screenshot taken on your Mac, and when did you start seeing this occur?
- Have you noticed that the darker/lighter grey coincides with say, getting a new message from a contact for example?
- We also see you have macOS Monterey 12 installed, but the latest version is macOS Monterey 12.5. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. This link will show how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.
