one drive for mac "couldn't communicate with helper app"?

How can I solve for one drive for mac not syncing correctly across all my devices? I have a mac, iPad and iPhone all have the one drive for mac app installed on all devices and each one shows a slightly different version from the other? Where is the configuration details set up buttons and how can I control the exact configuration across devices? Also I have another PC laptop that I also use the same one drive account on and it also has a different set of files that show up there that I cannot see on my onedrive for mac app? Please help to align all these files visibility across devices. My only clue is that "couldn't communicate with helper app" error comes up on my mac - I seached this for a solution and was unable to find any dorections for eliminating this error ?
