I have an iMac running High Sierra Version 10.13.6 and have uploaded MIrror for Samsung TV to run commercial DVD's to my Samsung TV. I can play the DVD's on my iMac and I can mirror video files to my Samsung TV but when I try to mirror a DVD I just get the audio and a grey screen to both the iMac and the Samsung TV. Is this a copyright issue or do I need to do something else?

it's a copyright thing airpay strip the stream of it's DRM so apple block it, some say some other dvd playing apps don't block it, but I've never tested it,

I think Rudegar is on the right track. how is the iMac connected to the Samsung tv? since the iMac is on high Sierra, I'm guessing that you have the Mini DisplayPort output on the iMac. is that correct? I know that my previous iMac only had the mini DisplayPort output. I connected it to my Samsung TV with a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter and a VGA cable. but I did need to also use a low latency bluetooth transmitter and receiver to send the audio. and with my current iMac, I'm connected to the same Samsung TV with an USB-C to HDMI adapter and an HDMI cable (and using an Apple USB Superdrive) and it sends both audio and video to the TV. in both applications, I never had issues playing any copy protected DVDs and sending it to my TV.

usb in the normal form don't really carry video signals so for normal usb to hdmi to work the cable needs to act as an external video card which also could mess with hdcp
ok. you're going to want to use a Mini DisplayPort / Thunderbolt to HDMI Adapter and an HDMI cable of adequate length. and with an HDMI cable of ~ 15 ft or more, you will want to shop for an active HDMI cable.
but I neglected to verify that the Samsung TV has an HDMI input. but I'm guessing that it does. if it doesn't, then please advise me on which inputs that the TV has.
and please note that the MiniDisplayPort does NOT send audio so you will need to use the iMac's speakers to hear what you are watching, or you can shop for an alternative such as a low latency BlueTooth transmitter and a low latency BT Receiver.

the mid 2011 iMac has a thunderbolt 1 / Mini DisplayPort output. not TB2.
Thanks Jeffrey. I have all sorts of outputs on this 2011 model but not sure what they're all called hahaha. But I'll get a USB to HDMI and try it. I did try LAN to LAN but couldn't figure it.
you're welcome. if you can tell me the model year of the iMac, I can tell you what outputs the Mac has and can advise you about the adapter and cable you should use.

my bad. I just realized that a TB 2 adapter is backwards compatible with the TB 1 port. sorry about that.

to the best of my knowledge also backward compatible with displayport as the connector is the same and the protocol for the video stream too, at least the ones i use are just displayport adaptors.
yes, that is correct. I equate TB1 with mDP when discussing video output.
