Controlling Apple TV with an iPad

I used to stream my computer iTunes music via home share on my Apple TV 3. I also used the Apple TV Remote app on my iPad.

It wasn't just a "remote" back then. You could interact with the interface which looked just like iTunes.

Now I have a Apple TV 4k and I see the Apple TV Remote app has been discontinued.

I've tried the iTunes Remote app, but I can't seem to connect to my Apple TV as a device with that.

Is there anyway these days I can connect to my Apple TV with an iPad and have that same type of functionality?

The interface of the software remote has changed a bit, and doesn’t reflect the currently playing content anymore like the old app did (and maybe some other things like Library). It’s just the remote, mimicking the physical remote.

The iTunes Remote app can control the iTunes application/TV app/Music app on Mac, and includes support for AirPlay from the Mac to an Apple TV box.
