Thunderbolt 1/2 ports compatible with Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter

So if I understand correctly I can use a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter for my Macbook Air (13-inch , Mid-2013) which has a Thunderbolt 1 port? The wording in the "Identify the ports on your Mac" article isn't very straightforward. I am trying to connect to a projector. I haven't found any adapters specific to Thunderbolt 1 or 2. Thanks!

Unfortunately this does not appear to be the case. I bought a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable. While the male end physically fit into my Thunderbolt 1 port, I got no picture/display coming through to the projector. Maybe Thunderbolt 1 is dead. I can't find any cables or adapters which feature the thunderbolt symbol, only Mini DisplayPort symbols.

It says it plugs in to Thunderbolt and to check device compatibility. It’s the same for any other cable/adapter I can find. They all have the Mini DisplayPort symbol. I haven’t found any with the Thunderbolt symbol. My thought now is to go for a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter but I’m worried the conversion/quality won’t be great. Thanks for your help.
