Can't connect webcam/mic to MacMini via HDMI

My new Mac mini doesn't detect the video camera or microphone which are integral to my ASUS BE24EQSK video conferencing monitor, connected to the Mac via HDMI. The ASUS user guide has information about using Windows Device Manager to manage cameras and microphones (no MacOS instructions), but I don't think there's a directly equivalent feature in Mac OS, where it appears the user must simply rely on the OS to detect these devices. I'm wondering if HDMI is in fact unidirectional, and maybe I have to use USB/Thunderbolt connections (or DVI with adapter) to enable the Mac to detect the camera and microphone. Or is there some feature in Mac OS (Monterey 12.5) that I'm not aware of?

Mac mini 2018 or later
