My apple email account is failing to sign on and send

Help!!

I recently changed my ID password and now whenever I send an email using my Apple ".............@me.com" account it fails with the following message: "Login to server imap.mail.me.com with username ............... failed."

Nothing else was changed, only the ID password.

I am using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with High Sierra v.10.13.6 and the mail client is Thunderbird v.91.13.0 (64-bit).

This also applies to an iPad 7th generation with iOs v.15.6.1

I am fairly certain that i was signed out before changing this password. I know it has been accepted because I signed in with it to access this community.

I have two iPads and a iMac but these have been kept turned off until I get the MacBook Pro "stable" and working. Not tried facebook etc yet, again until my email accounts are working...

The password was changed 3 days ago and I have been trying to sort this out since then. The only other device I have updated is my Android phone which worked first time!

No I haven’t. The program I am using (Thunderbird) doesn’t require a password at startup. When I send an email it uses the password created for the email service provider. I have gmail and talktalk (phone company) as well as the Apple mail. These are set in the case of the first two by accessing the web address of each provider and setting the password there (as I must have done originally). Apple Mail uses the ID password and therefore should use the current password set when I changed it.

I would have thought 2 or 3 days for it to be accepted should be more than enough time.

is an app specific pw different to the main ID pw? I assume it is. Yet another one to remember!

I have used a App-Specific PW for the one email account ending ....@me.com and have yet to see if its cured the problem.

I fail to see how this works and why its necessary. It appears to be related to the 2 factor authorization system that Apple now uses and checking the Mozilla forum appears to be causing a lot of heartache. The process is complicated and the description of how you do it isn't clear in the Apple instructions, but I did it. Why are you asked to enter a made up PW and then given another in the "xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx" format?

I would guess 99% of the Apple users feel this is far too difficult - I will post feedback.

How do I enter the account as an @iCloud.com account? Do I add another email account in Thunderbird and does that account automatically use the same app specific pw?

what is the difference between @iCloud and @me accounts anyway? I tend not to use the iCloud reserving it for stuff that needs to be shared between devices - keychain for example.
