Finder can't complete the operation - Error code -36

I am trying to move a file from a JVC camcorder to my Mac. However I get 'The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in the xxx.mod can't be read or written. (Error code -36).

I have tried dot_clean plus the directory path and this completes but still does not allow me to copy the file. Any other suggestions?

I actually downloaded VLC software and played the .MOD file which got stuck 75% of the way through (probably the problem), however there is a feature in VLC to record the image you are viewing and it will create an .mpg file. For some reason when I recorded it playing it did not get stuck, maybe a minor hesitation and then played to completion. The .mpg file was saved to my movies folder so all good - if by accident.
