This copy of the Install macOS Monterey application is damaged, and can‘t be used to install macOS.

I'm trying to upgrade from Mojave 10.14.6 on a 2019 MacBook Pro 13 inch, with 8GB memory and Intel Iris Plus graphics. I get the same error message whether I try to upgrade to Big Sur, or to Monterey - "This copy of the Install macOS XXXXX application is damaged, and can‘t be used to install macOS." (where XXXXX = Big Sur, or Monterey)

I have tried deleting the install packages, as well as deleting from trash, re-booting and re-downloading the install packages - I get the same error messages.

I have tried disabling my Norton anti-virus - same error messages.

I have tried installing in Safe Mode - same error messages.

Any help or advice much appreciated!

I managed to fix the problem - by upgrading to Catalina first. The upgrade from Catalina to Monterey then went smoothly (without disabling anything, without de-installing anything, and without resorting to Safe Mode).

So for some reason, I was unable to upgrade directly from Mojave to Monterey; but upgrading from Mojave to Catalina, and then Catalina to Monterey, works fine.

Try completely uninstalling Norton antivirus. It interferes with the MacOS sometimes, and disabling it is not enough.

Do you have any other system "enhancements" installed? All should probably be completely uninstalled, using vendor's uninstaller.

This is one of the worst results of such "protective" software. They can actually disable your Mac's normal operations worse than a real virus might. And by keeping you on an older operating system, your Mac is more vulnerable to all kinds of security issues that have been fixed in Monterey.

Sometimes Safe Mode is to enough. It depends on how the installer places files and where. There are examples in the Discussions where Safe Mode did not resolve an issue and either a complete uninstall of the offending software was required, or even a reinstall of the OS.

I don't know with 100% certainty that the antivirus is causing what you see, but something has altered the way your Mac is handling what should be a routine upgrade of the MacOS.

You can always reinstall the antivirus after a successful upgrade (but I would recommend against that).
