iPhone freezes and calls go silent after hitting Share Button

After recent update of 15.4 in iPhone XS Max I am facing this problem. I am on 15.6.1 and issue still exist. When I hit the share button in any app, be it sharing a screenshot over WhatsApp, or sharing a email attachment from mail app to WhatsApp OR in general hit share button in any iOS app to share photo/document with any other app in iOS the iPhone freezes.

I have to close the app from where I started the share to unfreeze the iPhone. Although iPhone get unfreeze but the strangely the incoming calls go silent after this. The only remedy is to restart the iPhone to get the incoming call ringing else all incoming calls be it cellular call or WhatsApp, everything becomes silent.

I have tried all usual remedy to fix ringtone but none has worked so far. I am on 15.6.1 and issue still persist as it is. No solution by Apple from 15.4 to 15.6.1.

The issue is quite easily reproducible.

Share any thing (say screenshot over WhatsApp) -> IPhone Freezes - > Close Screenshot -> iPhone UnFreezes -> Incoming Call Silent -> restart iPhone -> Incoming Call Ringing

Share any thing -> IPhone Freezes - > Close Screenshot -> iPhone UnFreezes -> Incoming Call Silent

It is endless, every time I hit share, issue occurs consistently. Sometime it reappear immediately, sometime after ~1 or 2 days but it do reappear.

Over internet people have suggested reset to factory settings, don't restore backup etc. Although these solution haven't worked but in my opinion Customer can not be expected to factory reset and don't restore backup. After years and years and years of usage of iPhones all I have accumulated is data over iPhone. We can't just let it go suddenly for this issue.

Apple should investigate and fix this issue at the earleist.

I upgraded to iOS 16.0.2 by end of Sep-2022 and since then share is working fine. No freeze and call not going silent. I didn't do anything to fix it. Just upgraded to iOS 16.0.2. That's it.

I will keep a watch for few more weeks to see if this situation persist.

All - I have not faced the issue since the last 9 days!, so I'm somewhat hopeful the issue may have got resolved for my Iphone 13 Pro on iOS 16.1 (I incorrectly mentioned 14 Pro in my last post)

Steps that I took:

  1. Removed the Company management profile (for my office mail) and also removed any third party keyboard ( Swiftkey)
  2. Connected phone to iTunes on my Windows laptop
  3. Backed up everything relevant (I usually back up Photos in Google Photos and use iCloud for Whatsapp, contacts, messages and general device settings)
  4. Clicked 'RESTORE' (which is similar to a factory reset) from ITUNES on my laptop
  5. When the phone restarted, I manually set it up. DO NOT SELECT THE OPTION TO RESTORE APPS AND DATA FROM A BACKUP OR ANYWHERE ELSE when you're prompted for it.
  6. After the full setup/ restart, MANUALLY INSTALLED all the apps again
    1. (Basic data for Contacts, Calendar, etc. automatically got updated from iCloud backup)
    2. (Whatsapp data was restored by going into Whatsapp and clicking the appropriate option).

Since then, 9 days have passed without the issue. Today, I've reinstalled SwitftKey and will see if it causes any issues. After 1 week of no issue, I'll also reenable my office email by accepting the management profile/settings.

Others - Do try the above steps and share your experience.

I have iPhone 14 Pro. Have faced the issue since I bought it (iOS 15.6 i think) and have continually faced the issue even after upgrading to iOS 16.

Have been chasing Apple Support and I request everyone to get onto call/ chat and chase Apple support instead of just posting messages here.

The first line of support will then escalate to the senior advisor who will try to investigate (with no success) and then escalate to the Technical team. The more cases that get raised to the Technical teams, the sooner we might expect that someone in that team will take note and fix this issue in the next release.

Note - I've already interacted with 3 senior advisors at different occasions and showed them the issue by:

  • Screen sharing with them and showing them the issue
  • They remote logging into my phone and guiding me on enabling some advanced issued tracking, etc.
  • Recording a video of the issue and uploading to the case.
  • Changing settings (while remote sharing the phone) for Airplay; reducing apps visible in share; changing country/location, etc.

Please everyone, go to their support chat here: Apple Support and start raising cases.

Same exact issue. I bought a new 13 pro and this issue started right away. I did a few factory resets, Apple even send me a new phone and still it persists. I worked with an advanced customer support person and shared multiple diagnostics, videos of my screen while it happened, etc over a few weeks. I missed one call

back from that tech support person and when I called back I spoke to another person who blamed my mobile carrier, said she would email me her direct phone to reach out once I talked to my mobile carrier, and I never received the call info so I have have given up for now. So disappointed

Facing the same issue on my iPhone 13 Pro.

Current OS: iOS 15.6.1

Options already tried and didn't help:

  1. Full reset of the phone + reinstall of apps.
  2. Reduced the number of apps which appear on Share
  3. Updated the location/ region of phone to ensure they all match (I'm in UK)

I've had a number of chats with their support, but they have no idea.

I am having this issue whenever I try to share something to FB. Beginning to wonder if it’s another example of Apple and FB not playing nicely together. Previously to be directed here, I have read 2 previous threads on this issue, which has apparently been an issue for over a year. I do not have WhatsApp installed, I have the latest IOS installed, and none of the other solutions suggested are in play. The only way to free up the app I’m trying to share from is to power down and that is not an acceptable solution for any of us. Hopefully, someone in Apple Tech Support will actually express an interest in solving this. I’m getting frustrated and a tiny bit peeved. 😖
