It’s bad enough having two columns in Safari on my iPad but the third column that pops in from one side or another is hardly readable or at least a real pain in terms of being easily readable. In some cases the print or pictures run off the page. Is there some way to eliminate the third column?

You need to explore multitasking - as you have a slide-out view of an App enabled. Key to accessing and controlling multi-tasking is the small “three-dot” button that is found at the top-centre edge of the screen.

What third column? Perhaps you are using a combination of Split Screen in Safari and Split View?

Close one or both of them.
The problem requires additional explanation because "the third column" presumes a common affliction.
