XCode 14: git broken

After updating to latest Xcode (14, 14A309) the git command line has stopped working. A dialog appears saying command line tools needs to be installed. Doing so, by clicking Install, doesn't solve anything. In Terminal I get a backtrace, see attached. I'm on a Macbook 2017. What is the fix?

MacBook, macOS 12.5

The minimum supported operating system for Xcode 14 is macOS 12.5. With macOS 12.6 and Xcode 14 installed, you may be able to update the Command Line tools like so from the Terminal:

softwareupdate -l
software update -i "Command Line Tools for Xcode-14.0"

and this installs git v2.37.0.

Pieces appear missing.

I’d update to macOS 12.6 with its restart, would remove and re-install Xcode 14 and launch it once, would restart the Mac again after the Xcode install, and would then (try to) install the command line tools again.

Failing the above, log a radar with the Apple Developer folks.

I’ve just downloaded Xcode 14, and have already updated to 12.6, and will be having a look at this Real Soon Now.

Perhaps you should review your setup and configuration. Whatever was broken before could still be broken and cause problems in the future.

And maybe wait a few days before applying updates. If you are the first, and you have problems, other people won't be able to help. I finally go around to updating to macOS 12.6 and Xcode 14. I experienced no problem with git.

I'm unaware of Apple, or anyone else for that matter, including Git's developer Linus Torvalds, ever saying that about Git.

Although there are principles and technologies in Git that are good, someone should take those and do a renovation.

I doubt that will happen. The conditions that led to the development of things like Linux and Git are different now.

Perhaps, perhaps Apple would do a good job at the interface/usability part, the part that needs renovation most. It's a funny world when the best revisioning system out there is Git.

That definitely won’t happen. Apple has always struggled with source control systems in Xcode, since before Git even existed. They don’t seem to understand some of the most basic concepts. I regularly have to use the command line version because Xcode gets completely confused.
