Airpod volume extremely loud when answering a call with IOS 16

I just installed IOS 16 yesterday, and this problem just showed up.

No matter what volume my phone (iPhone 12 mini) is set at, when I get a phone call and then insert my airpods in my ears before answering, the volume from my ringtone through the airpods starts out painfully loud.

Is this an IOS 16 issue or did installing the OS mess up some of my previous settings?

Thanks

Rich

I've had the same problem and I found the best solution available so far. The ring volume in your AirPods is tied to the volume in your Sounds & Haptics settings. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics: Ringtons and Alert Tones.

Mine is set to 100%, which blew out my ears. I turned it down to about 20%. My setting for "Change with Buttons" is off.

I called my phone from another line with my AirPods in and it was much more gentle on my ears.

Right, that’s why I thought “tone volume” in the AirPods setting may be the answer. It wasn’t though. I got a phone call while listening to music and it rang so very loud. This is so frustrating. I don’t understand why the ring volume when using headphones is so deafening. Perhaps it has something to do with Bluetooth. When my phone is connected to a Bluetooth speaker or my car, the volume is automatically all the way up. Maybe the phone app is using the Bluetooth speaker volume setting for incoming calls?

To test this I’ve connected my phone to a Bluetooth speaker and turned down my phone volume to what I usually have my headphones set.

I've disconnected from the speaker and connected to my AirPods.

I’ll update after my next phone call if this is a workaround.

I have the same exact issue never had the problem until iOS 16. At first I thought it was my second generation AirPods but then I bought a new pair (old ones died)and I had the same issue and then I got a new phone iPhone 14 same issue! I went to the Apple store they did nothing, claiming it was a software issue, and there was nothing they could do. Every time!! I feel like my eardrums are going to explode! WHY????

Honestly, the bottom line is these are all Apple products, and they’re not working together with each other. This is their problem and they need to fix it. The issue is they don’t care. I went down to the store, and they looked at me like I was crazy. I spoke to them on the phone they never heard of the issue, they don’t care. I use my gen two AirPods with my phone when I’m doing my run and listening to my music so you can imagine in the middle of that….Getting a blast so loud you could fall over. I also use them when I’m home for my iPod from time to time as well as sometimes when I’m on the phone it’s just very sad that you can complain from today until next year and it’s just not going to change. For the people who have had this issue before iOS 16 I can’t speak, I can only speak for myself and as soon as I download iOS 16 that’s when I started having the problem.

I have since emailed them and haven’t had a response.

Hi,

I have the same issue. Incoming call ringtone is way too loud in my airpods. This is very annonying and moreover it really HURTS my ears. I can't believe Apple is not fixing this.

As for now, I have set my ringtone volume at the minimum but I will sure miss calls with this setting...

It’s horrible and apparently no one at Apple cares at all. I thought originally it was the AirPods the second generation. I got new ones and it was still doing it! OK it’s not the AirPods then I thought maybe it was the phone no it wasn’t the phone.. I now have a brand new phone and it’s doing the same thing. This is definitely an iOS 16 issue. And I used to slide the thing all the way down and then I would forget to bring it back and I would missed calls and I would miss text messages. I just keep it in the middle now it’s just really annoying that nobody listens I was just a software thing the engineers will take care of it. OK I’ve been hearing this for months already….

I’m having a similar issue, but my problem is only when I make calls. While waiting for the other person to pick up the phone it rings extremely loudly. I turn the volume of the call all the way down, and it’s still unbearable. When the person answers the volume works with the buttons and is adjustable again. This is extremely aggravating for making calls with AirPods in

I have the same issue. It seems like many others do as well. This is extremely damaging to one’s hearing. Every time I get a phone call I yank my AirPods out like they’re on fire and my heart starts pounding wildly because it’s so insanely loud and jarring. It’s deafening. Apple only gives generic responses and doesn’t bother addressing the problem at all. I sound ridiculous but it’s ridiculous they have this awful technical issue that is genuinely affecting our health and blowing out our ear drums from an issue they refuse to resolve.
