MacBookPro suddenly will not Screen Mirror to TV.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)

Updated iOS to 12.6 yesterday.

Sony Bravia 55"

Screen mirroring from all devices has worked flawlessly previously.

Screen Mirroring to the Sony works from iPhone and another MacBookPro (2017). It’s iOS also updated yesterday.

When the MacBook is Screen Mirrored to another TV w/Apple TV (older, not-smart Sony), the MacBook Screen Mirrors fine.

What happens:

- When Screen Mirroring is called upon the Sony Bravia TV via the Apple TV, the TV image reduces and bunches the MacBook’s screen image including any open apps such as email ands messages.

- At the same time, the screen on the McBook turns to a multi-colored screen saver theme and the mouse is disappears.

- When the fingerprint button is touched on the MacBook, the TV screen goes to the MacBook screen’s password log-in window, yet that was not the image on the MacBook when Screen Mirroring was attempted. The mouse is still unavailable, so a hard cash to restart the MacBook was needed.

- The TV screen then holds a latent, image of the screen. Very black background with parts of the "reduced and bunched" McBook screen barely recognizable. The TV and/or Apple TV then needs to be turned-off to escape.

- Once all is restarted and the same steps to screen mirror are taken, the same problem repeats.

Actions taken w/o Resolve:

  • All three devices (Apple TV, MacBook and TV) were restarted.

  • Apple TV was reset to factory settings and reformatted using iPhone.

  • No other changes to the MacBook other than the iOS upgrade were made before this incident.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi buckbell,

Updating the software for your TV may help. If needed, this link will get you in contact with Sony Support.

If no update is available, or if updating doesn't help, test with a different Administrator account on your Mac: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

This will help with determining if the issue is specific to one account or possibly system-wide.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
2. Click the Add button below the list of users.
3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose Administrator.
4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
6. Click Create User.

Best regards.

Thanks for your ideas. The Sony is on auto update, yet did a manual one to be sure. Also tried the alternate Admin approach. It did cause one thing to act differently...when Screen Mirroring was called-on, the TV itself did not compress the screen image as previously. But the MacBook still froze on the opening background screen pattern and required a hard restart to resolve. May be time to call Apple support. Has to be something deeper that has gone awry. Thanks again!
