Homekit Automations are broken in iOS 16

Since iOS 16 HomeKit automations aren't triggered reliably. Simple timed automations like "Open Shutters at 9am" are triggered randomly. All my Hubs, Homepods, iPhones, etc are up-to-date, restarted, reseted all the devices, recreated all the automations, but still not reliable.

My only solution at the moment is to schedule the automations with the accessories' own hub. (eg. IKEA light automations are set in IKEA's own app, and my Bosch smart home shutters are scheduled within Bosch's app) It works, but would be better to see everything within Apple's Home.

I too suffered from my automations no longer working after upgrading my AppleTV's (4K and HD) to TV OS 16. After about 5 days of troubleshooting I cannot say what specifically is wrong but I can provide what seems to be a consistent way to create HomeKit automations that consistently work on IOS 16 / TV OS 16.

  1. First, the iphone / ipad you run this procedure on must be running IOS 16 for this to work.
  2. Delete the automation in question (either via the Home app or the Shortcuts app)
  3. Create the automation in the latest version of the shortcut app (Do NOT use the Home App).
  4. In the shortcut application when you create your automation, do not select your scene or accessory in the first menu, instead scroll down to the bottom and select "Convert to shortcut"
  5. In the shortcut menu select your scene or accessory as you normally would.
  6. Before hitting "Done" in the Shortcut menu, select the small arrow at the very bottom right of the screen to test your script. Assuming it works as desired you can select "Done" in the Shortcut menu.
  7. Now don't panic, it takes approximately 3-5 seconds to copy the new automation to your home hub before it will be listed in the Automations screen.

This has worked consistently for me for both simple automations such as turning on a light at a certain time as well as complex automations based on location that SSH into a remote server.

Good Luck

  • i cannot select what hub capable deviceis used - but the atv’s are in control today and they work well
  • the two ios version seem to work equally well
  • the wemo devices seem to have wifi connection problems - don’t like them but they usually work unless i turn them on/off rapidly - then the seem to get confused - probably will eventually replace but for now they are used for non-critical lights (halloween pumpkins and are inexpensive)

i have a few of the new eve wall switches but also don’t plan to install until i see better stability

overall Apple has decreased in many areas of reliability - is it the work from home standard? who knows - but this is showing up especially in their non-flag ship products like homekit. i can appreciate the complexity of doing an alpha testing of new software - the combination of possible failure modes can be staggering. i have also seen it in the iWatch, but it is still unacceptable

, are we seeing the high water mark for Apple? hope not

It took me quite a while to type out my last post and I edited it a bunch. After posting I went back and looked at my iPhone and I am on iOS16.03 and should have corrected that before posting. If I recall correctly now I updated before I logged out and back into my iCloud Account on the AppleTV that is connected to my Home. I still stand by my belief that the issues are with tvOS 16.

My Apple TV is my connected hub and my HPs are in standby.

Yes, I didn't mention this, but I am able to send remote commands from outside my house and they've worked. But I didn't have an issue with this before, just as I could tap "test this automation" on any failing automation and it would work anyway on demand. Also for clarity, I have all Philips Hue lights with a connected bridge. And I do not have geofencing enabled in the Hue app. I wanted to use HomeKit for this, and all other automations. I only have 1 time-based automation setup with the Hue app because it's not a feature Apple offers (gradually dim lights for an hour until off).

Please keep us posted with your results. I was hoping I would not have to completely delete my Home and add back 40+ items, but it seems it might be the only option. I did notice something new with my Home setup: on my iPhone 14 PM with iOS 16.0.3 I can no longer do a "Restart" of any of my HP minis, but if I use my iPad with iOS 15.7 (19H12) it does work and I do see "Restarting" displayed at the top of the screen as it has always done before with my iPhone 13 PM running iOS 15. So now I am wondering if I should hold off getting the new iOS for iPad when it is released tomorrow. Anyway, these issues are disappointing after having such great home automations with Home for the past few years since switching over from ISY 994 to Apple Home. But other than this forum (20-30 members) there does not appear to be many who have developed corrupt Home setups after installing iOS 16, and certainly no public acknowledgment from Apple that issues with Home exists after iOS 16.

Concur… some of my Hue lights came on at 2:00am. At first I thought it was the Hue hub but realized that the problem began with the 16 update.

Apple has become very insular regarding customer satisfaction. The recent offerings are a joke! Apple Watch Extreme(ly) overpriced? Why not call it a Samsung square Galaxy?

Recently called Apple Support for an AirPods Pro (gen2) issue. It remains unresolved. The “Genius” reacted negatively when I said I purchased them at Amazon, saving $10, same payment option albeit not next day. At the end of the chat he stated ‘… I would never buy AirPods…’

Things have been mostly going well for me too since I did all those steps to resolve the automation issue.

But once again, this time around 5:12am, I was awakened to my very bright lights turned on. It seemed as though my Coming Home Scene was activated, which makes me think the software indirectly registered as me coming home? This was the automation that broke. Now that I fixed it, it seems as though the system wants to overuse it and enable it incorrectly, when I'm asleep. This has been the second time this has happened. Hopefully the 16.1 updates fix these issues. But I checked the home hub and it was my Apple TV, which had just updated yesterday. And then this happened. So I don't have faith. This is still so frustrating.

I thought I’d add my two cents.

I’m a new HomeKit user and only recently set up a home. I’ve got 8 HomePod Minis, 12 Nanoleaf bulbs, two smart thermostats, 9 smart thermostatic valves, a smart TV with HomeKit compatibility and a HomeKit compatible surround system.

This was all set up quite recently, on iOS 16.

The automation is hit or miss. Sometimes it’ll work and other times it won’t. The automations that fail are a mixture of types:

  • when somebody arrives;
  • when somebody leaves;
  • when a time of day occurs; and
  • when an accessory is controlled.

They’re all intermittent.

Yesterday, when my wife came home, the heating turned on. That’s as desired and expected. At 21:00, it should turn off. It didn’t.

Does anybody know if the new HomeKit architecture will help with this?

Oct 29, 2022 8:34 AM in response to jack0922

Unfortunately that's not the case for me. Everything is up to date. All HomePods are on the latest version.

I checked all the devices for updates. The iPhone and iPad are both on 16.1, the HomePods are all up to date, and I event took the liberty of updating all the firmwares on the home accessories as well. It's really hit and miss on whether the automations work or not.

I have tried almost all of the solutions proposed here and nothing works consistently. Spent enough time on this will hope new architecture fixes some of the automation woes.

I have noticed a new thing going in which is the camera status lights being turned back on (they were all turned off in native app and HomeKit and after upgrade they all turned on again) I turned them all off again and now notice about half of them have turned themselves on again in HomeKit and native app.

Yeah, I’ve deleted the home Kitt home three times. I have four home pod minis and three Apple TVs. I have one home pod mini setup as an alarm clock, it never works. I can’t trust home kitt and will not buy another apple device until apple sauce gets their head out of their butt. I’m working on the most up to date OS, none of it works. Go Amazon!!
