Homekit Automations are broken in iOS 16

Since iOS 16 HomeKit automations aren't triggered reliably. Simple timed automations like "Open Shutters at 9am" are triggered randomly. All my Hubs, Homepods, iPhones, etc are up-to-date, restarted, reseted all the devices, recreated all the automations, but still not reliable.

My only solution at the moment is to schedule the automations with the accessories' own hub. (eg. IKEA light automations are set in IKEA's own app, and my Bosch smart home shutters are scheduled within Bosch's app) It works, but would be better to see everything within Apple's Home.

I too suffered from my automations no longer working after upgrading my AppleTV's (4K and HD) to TV OS 16. After about 5 days of troubleshooting I cannot say what specifically is wrong but I can provide what seems to be a consistent way to create HomeKit automations that consistently work on IOS 16 / TV OS 16.

  1. First, the iphone / ipad you run this procedure on must be running IOS 16 for this to work.
  2. Delete the automation in question (either via the Home app or the Shortcuts app)
  3. Create the automation in the latest version of the shortcut app (Do NOT use the Home App).
  4. In the shortcut application when you create your automation, do not select your scene or accessory in the first menu, instead scroll down to the bottom and select "Convert to shortcut"
  5. In the shortcut menu select your scene or accessory as you normally would.
  6. Before hitting "Done" in the Shortcut menu, select the small arrow at the very bottom right of the screen to test your script. Assuming it works as desired you can select "Done" in the Shortcut menu.
  7. Now don't panic, it takes approximately 3-5 seconds to copy the new automation to your home hub before it will be listed in the Automations screen.

This has worked consistently for me for both simple automations such as turning on a light at a certain time as well as complex automations based on location that SSH into a remote server.

Good Luck

The more replies I read the more perplexing is this issue. I have three latest Apple TV boxes, but have never used any of them with HomeKit (all disabled): I use two HomePod minis. My problem is that after updating to iOS 16.02 all my Eve Thread devices and all NanoLeaf Thread devices stopped working and I am unable to add them back even after reluctantly deleting the HK App from 2 iPhones, 2 iPads (could not delete HK application from MBPro and Mac Studio). But all my non-Thread devices remain operational within the HK App and all continue to trigger via timers/remote/Siri commands. I have used HK since it came out and have gradually added new devices and worked great, but this is the very first time installed devices (only Thread ones) have failed. I suspect Matter, but have no proof.

This is a joke, I just need it to work! We’re paying top dollar for no good reason anymore. We used to get a reliable product from Apple and they genuinely seemed to care but that died with Steve. All Apple seems to care about now is getting something new and shiny out to consumers working or not so they can increase their bottom line. I’m trying to figure out how to convert my whole family to Google but I don’t think that’s a reality, so fix your garbage Apple and focus back on us, your customers, not your pockets. Be the best again so when someone asks “Why do you use an Apple?”, I can once again say “because every time I use it, it works”.

Thanks, and I fully understand. Before HK I had a great stable, dependable and expansive UD ISY-994 smart-home system with over 300 devices. We were controlling our FL home from Middle East work location. Stupidly -- as someone who too quickly locked into the Apple Eco System, I retired my ISY system snd started buying HK stuff. I expanded every month and all worked fine and was happy except for the lame timers and automation restrictions/limitation compared to UD ISY. But it all ended with iOS16. This tells me Apple is not serious about Home App. They need to hire folk from UD.

Same here: sadly after 3 days working, the five Thread devices I was successfully able to add back for testing have all stopped working as on this morning. I really don't want to have to delete my entire Home and start setting up from scratch because I am not optimistic this will work. Has anyone done this and found the problems resolved after several days?

Thanks. I did all the steps you suggest, and I was able to add back my Thread devices (only added back a few for test purposes). But all the Thread bulb/plugs/door sensors/motion have failed again as of this morning. I see many other having issues but I appear to be the only one where Thread devices fail. I can add back numerous non-Thread devices and they all stay working. Very frustrating.

Deleting the Home App required I remove my two HP minis. The Factory Reset steps use to be very easy in the past (unplug, wait 10 secs, hold finger on top until red spinning circle/3 beeps, but it has now become very difficult to do a reset. Anyone else notice this issue with HP mini factory resets? Am wondering if these HP mini hubs could be causing issues with Home.
