Homekit Automations are broken in iOS 16

Since iOS 16 HomeKit automations aren't triggered reliably. Simple timed automations like "Open Shutters at 9am" are triggered randomly. All my Hubs, Homepods, iPhones, etc are up-to-date, restarted, reseted all the devices, recreated all the automations, but still not reliable.

My only solution at the moment is to schedule the automations with the accessories' own hub. (eg. IKEA light automations are set in IKEA's own app, and my Bosch smart home shutters are scheduled within Bosch's app) It works, but would be better to see everything within Apple's Home.

I too suffered from my automations no longer working after upgrading my AppleTV's (4K and HD) to TV OS 16. After about 5 days of troubleshooting I cannot say what specifically is wrong but I can provide what seems to be a consistent way to create HomeKit automations that consistently work on IOS 16 / TV OS 16.

  1. First, the iphone / ipad you run this procedure on must be running IOS 16 for this to work.
  2. Delete the automation in question (either via the Home app or the Shortcuts app)
  3. Create the automation in the latest version of the shortcut app (Do NOT use the Home App).
  4. In the shortcut application when you create your automation, do not select your scene or accessory in the first menu, instead scroll down to the bottom and select "Convert to shortcut"
  5. In the shortcut menu select your scene or accessory as you normally would.
  6. Before hitting "Done" in the Shortcut menu, select the small arrow at the very bottom right of the screen to test your script. Assuming it works as desired you can select "Done" in the Shortcut menu.
  7. Now don't panic, it takes approximately 3-5 seconds to copy the new automation to your home hub before it will be listed in the Automations screen.

This has worked consistently for me for both simple automations such as turning on a light at a certain time as well as complex automations based on location that SSH into a remote server.

Good Luck

My hub is an Apple TV HD. I did try turning off and on the “make Apple TV a hub” option but will try it again.

Just noticed a firmware update for my Meross smart plugs that mentioned something about responsiveness.

What a **** show. Will be tossing all my smart plugs and going forward with matter, thank god I’m not too invested in regular HomeKit hw.

deleting all your automations and ‘nuking’ everything is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. People have found solutions they’re listed up above.. instead of saying you’re so frustrated Read what other people have done to fix us. hint: it’s usually a device that doesn’t have the most recent update, or updated itself incorrectly.

Let’s ease up. Obviously this is an impactful situation for a lot of people and a long time. To disable a HomePod and if people have multiple ones, that’s a lot of work. Then to delete the app itself, reboot phone, and re add HomeKit app, a lot can go wrong. If someone has 54 bulbs, 2 door sensors, 2 light strips, 2 smart locks, smart camera, door bell cam, 5 smart outlets, I would never delete the app in fear I would lose everything. That’s a test by fire method.

My method worked for me, for my environment, for now. Obviously a lot of work. I have been at it with Apple's lack of software quality a long time. Testing why things aren't working, how to workaround, fix or just repost the issue with support.

Contacting support for these things out if

the gate is just painful for all involved.

What is there to lose? Scenes I need to manage my house, security, HVAC/radiant heat systems? It was already broken.

And I did all of the HomePods because over they get flakey, unresponsive and have to be reset anyway.

I am looking forward to common standards in devices that allow us to break from an eco system without loosing a limb. In the meantime I'm using the apps that don't require HomeKit scenes, automations, or

device shortcuts and I've turned off auto updates where I can.

happy holidays

Thank you. Someone gets it.

My final comment on this is: I (and others) have suggested a simple temporary fix that will probably solve the problem for a lot of people. It did for me. It will be entirely up to whoever is looking for help and finds this discussion to decide whether they believe it's worth trying that solution first, or whether they'd prefer to try a far more time consuming method first. Some will see the logic and sense in at least trying the easy solution and escalating only if it doesn't work for them. Others won't. Not much else left to say.
