How to fix overexposure issues on iPhone 14 Pro Max Photos?

I purchased my IPhone 14 Pro Max today and it has an annoying over exposure that it does to all my photos. It look very different from what I'm seeing on the screen when I'm taking the photo. How do I fix this to get this automatic over exposure turned off?

So we are all agree that this is a huge problem!

Different comments pointing out same issues when we talk about photos:

  • Horrible HDR post processing
  • Insane over exposure
  • Extreme sharpening
  • Super grainy and desaturated
  • Awful contrast and lighting

On my side I think that buying a 1TB iPhone and shooting 48MP RAW isn't the solution nor turning off Full HDR View, I mean this should work flawless just out of the box.

I'm looking forward to any iOS updates (literally checking more than ten times a day) because this should be fixed.

Please raise your hand if you are having this same issue, we need a solution.

I'm having the same problem, the post processing or smart HDR or whatever is terrible!!

Way different that i'm seeing in front of my eyes, not even the RAW photo looks good.

And the most dissapointing is the one or two seconds when you see your perfect picture and turns into a horrible overprocessed photo.

And there is no way to turn off that.

I spent a lot of money on an iPhone 14 Pro, because i love to take photos and used to have the best cameras, and i'm super dissapointed.

I have the same issue; turning off the View Full HDR does not help. I contacted Apple to confirm that it is a known issue. Full call was over 30 minutes. They suggested Settings>Camera> turn on Preserve Settings, which did not help. The tips she had as a resource for this known issue also suggested adjusting exposure, which I had already done, and as we all know, does not change that burst of light that happens. Connected me to a senior advisor after those steps. I chose the step to get a new phone and I'll update with a reply to this post once I get that new phone.

I have the same problem on the 14 Pro. The processing is just horrible. 1 sec the picture looks great on the viewfinder but after the processing the photo is over sharp, over exposed and the contrast is a way off the charts. Hope apple fixes this soon. Luckily the 48MP RAW mode is unaffected and the photos looks great..

I upgraded from 12 pro max to 14 pro max and i can confirm the quality of photos on the latest greatest iphone 14 pro max is horrible.

Before i take the picture it looks fine, but when i open it on photos it’s very sharpened and grainy. almost as if there’s a filter on it. i went in settings and turned off view full hdr but didn’t notice a difference. All pictures i take especially the selfies apply this grainy metallic horrible color.

APPLE YOU NEED TO FIX THIS ASAP!

I bought two 14 pro max for me and my wife and both of them do the same horrible after effect to pictures. We are very disappointed on the latest iPhones.

Readers be aware do not buy the latest iphone 14 until they fix this issue.

Hello, I’m also having this problem with my iPhone 14 Pro Max — every minutiae on my face is exaggerated into crude detail. It’s something with the sharpness mixed with image processing that’s led to this over exposure. Please fix! Any tips?

edit: Sadly, I’ve found that taking screen shots of the picture you want is a horrible solution but it gets the picture you want…

Ok so what has worked personally for me on the 14 Pro are the three things listed down below that resulted in a much better overall camera experience. Experiment with them and see what works for you.

a)Turn on ProRAW if you are a baller and got the 1TB storage. (Easiest option)

b) Keep live photos on when taking pictures. Then, when you are viewing the pictures in the photos app, on the top left, click on the option live and select off. You'll immediately see a difference where the phone will give you a much closer photo to how it was in the viewfinder. If you prefer the super contrasty and HDR-ish look in some scenes then just shoot normally without live and you'll get that style of photo.

c) In addition to the above 2 steps, turn on one of the photographic styles by swiping up in the camera app and clicking the 3 frames icon. Select a photographic style that you want for example, rich contrast then turn the intensity all the way down to 1 or 0 if you don't want it to change the way your photos come out. That should take care of some of the oversharpening in the photos.

I know this is not ideal and that we shouldn't have to tinker around so much to get decent looking pictures from a $1000 phone but what can you do. This is my first iPhone as well and coming from Android I thought this would be the most stable bug free experience but we all know how iOS 16 has been. It has improved but definitely not the buttery smooth experience that iPhones were known for.

Hope this helps!

Me too! Photos are overexposed, with agressive postprocessing and with no variant to swith HDR off! Apple removed Smart HDR option in Camera Settings (I really want to return this checkbox back!).

Additionaly I have an issue with sharpness. My photos on iPhone 14 Pro Max are worse than photos on my old iPhone 11 Pro max! I've tested in the same conditions and scenes. When there are some text on the corner of frame, it is visible to the naked eye that text are blurry and there is no way to make it more sharp :(

So I see no progress in front camera and HDR, only regress. 11 Pro Max camera and processing algorithm is better! As my father says: "Best is the enemy of the good" :(

Please consider photo comparison: iPhone 11 pro max vs iPhone 14 pro max. 100% crop.
