How to fix overexposure issues on iPhone 14 Pro Max Photos?

I purchased my IPhone 14 Pro Max today and it has an annoying over exposure that it does to all my photos. It look very different from what I'm seeing on the screen when I'm taking the photo. How do I fix this to get this automatic over exposure turned off?

If you are experiencing over or under exposure in either the Photo Mode or Portrait Mode, check your exposure compensation (EC) setting, icon below. There is a separate EC for photo mode and portrait mode. If you intentionally or accidentally set this off of zero, the offset will stay until you physically reset it to zero. Any offset will show up in the upper left of your screen with the mini histogram. Click on the histogram to open EXC and reset.

No guarantees, but this may solve your problem.

I have the same issue; turning off the View Full HDR does not help. I contacted Apple to confirm that it is a known issue. Full call was over 30 minutes. They suggested Settings>Camera> turn on Preserve Settings, which did not help. The tips she had as a resource for this known issue also suggested adjusting exposure, which I had already done, and as we all know, does not change that burst of light that happens. Connected me to a senior advisor after those steps. I chose the step to get a new phone and I'll update with a reply to this post once I get that new phone.

mine Is awful too. I made an appointment with the Apple Store and they didn’t know how to help either. I’ve been trying different things and this is what has worked for me so far.

you can change the exposure level of the picture before you take it. For me, I had to increase mine to 1.3 or even 1.7 for it to look normal to me. When the camera is open you can do this in the left hand corner or from the settings of the camera. Then in the settings, you can make it save your preference so you don’t have to do it each time. It will save the preference you used last until you change it again.

I have no idea if this is actually good advice, but it’s just what I’ve discovered on my own through trial and error. I definitely can tolerate the camera more now… even though I feel like it’s still horrible that it’s like this in comparison with my old iPhones.

So we are all agree that this is a huge problem!

Different comments pointing out same issues when we talk about photos:

  • Horrible HDR post processing
  • Insane over exposure
  • Extreme sharpening
  • Super grainy and desaturated
  • Awful contrast and lighting

On my side I think that buying a 1TB iPhone and shooting 48MP RAW isn't the solution nor turning off Full HDR View, I mean this should work flawless just out of the box.

I'm looking forward to any iOS updates (literally checking more than ten times a day) because this should be fixed.

Please raise your hand if you are having this same issue, we need a solution.
