iPhone 12 Pro - Unknown Part warning for camera

A few weeks ago I was taking photos and set my phone down. When I picked it up and opened the camera the screen was black. Closed app, turned phone off and back on, opened camera again and it seemed fine at first but then I got the unknown part warning. Every time I open the camera now it is in two times zoom but I can tap the 2 and turn it back. Portrait mode cannot be taken out of 2x zoom. This phone has never been repaired, has always been in a good case and has no body damage. I would love to say it's never been dropped but we all know that would be a lie. Over the nearly 2 years I've had it it has been dropped on hard ground maybe a half a dozen times, a couple feet to carpet a dozen or so, but I can't remember the last time it fell so the message isn't the result of a drop. Internet searches have lead me to believe this is a fairly common issue. Anyone know what to do about this?

Hello PlantLady331,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help get your camera working perfectly again. Start with these steps describing the issue:

"Remove case, accessory, or film and test

  1. Remove any case, accessory, or film that might block the camera or flash or that places a magnet near the camera.
  2. Test the camera by trying to take a photo.
  3. Test the LED flash:
    1. Try the flashlight in Control Center on your iPhone or Control Center on your iPad. On an iPhone X or later or an iPad, swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen. On an iPhone 8 or earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen.
    2. Tap the Flashlight button Flashlight icon.

If the flash works only sometimes, open the Camera app and tap the flash button   to choose a different setting.

Contact Apple Support

If the camera or flash still isn't working properly, contact Apple Support to discuss service options."

This Apple Support page has the full details: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't working - Apple Support

We hope this helps to further isolate and resolve the source of the camera issue.

Cheers!
