In a group text, if there is one Android user in the group, it ruins the experience for the whole group. The messages sent will not often send, very unpredictable, and forget about attachments altogether.
However, I did a bit of reading and have come to realize that this 'issue' is related to Android pushing their own proprietary system called RCS, which is different than SMS. So I stand corrected.
It would seem that Android users wishing to communicate correctly with Apple users need to turn off RCS, which apparently can be done in most cases.
It seems that everyone needs to get together and invent a new standard to replace SMS, rather than the "big dogs" each making up their own. Cause you know Apple will adopt their own soon, just make things even worse.

That written, carrier SMS sometimes disappears.
Google had some interest in an SMS replacement that the carriers had been working on a while back but had cooled, and there’s the obvious question why anybody would even now be pushing a carrier-based system for messaging, given all the available alternatives. Other than that RCS routes traffic through Google, that is. And oddly enough for the current era, data encryption is an add-on and not part of RCS, and what was available as an add-on was not encrypting group chats.
What texting issue are you talking about? iPhones users can text Android users and vice versa without any issues. I send and receive texts from my Android using friends all the time. Apple doesn’t have to ‘fix’ anything. If you are referring to Google trying to force Apple to adopt RCS thats not going to happen any time soon. Tim Cook said so.
So again, explain what issue you are referring to.
RCS “Rich Communication Suite” is part of GSMA (the GSM cellular networking folks), is not proprietary, is one of various chat protocols available, and is not known for its security.
RCS chats are unencrypted, while one-to-one chats can be optionally encrypted using vendor extensions.
Multi-party RCS chats are not encrypted.
There are communications stakeholders and other entities that do not want chats encrypted or that would want poorly encrypted chats, and there are those others that do want secure encryption for chats, so schisms are to be expected.
Secure multi-party encryption is not an easy technical problem, though Signal and others can provide secure group chats.
And here’s what respected tech site Ars Technica has to say about RCS and Google’s proprietary fork of it. And RCS isn’t new either, its from 2008. What’s ’new’ is Google’s implementation of it and how it will require going through Google’s servers, not something Apple will likely be willing to do.

Apple-Android texting has a moderate success rate, particularly with long messages. It would be great if this could be addressed! I noticed an article that stated Apple doesn’t get much feedback on Apple-Android texting issues. This has been a long-standing issue that apparently has solutions.
As we are fellow users, we have no idea about Apple's internal planning and Apple product teams are embargoed from contributing to these public, Google archived communities.
