My Macbook runs hot and fans go wild with barely anything happening

So this is strange,i'm trying to figure out if it is a software or hardware issue. Roblox only using up around 40% of CPU my temperatures get up to 100c.

Is this a software issue? or could be hardware? possible dust build-up?

Yep, your CPU temps are very high. The Activity Monitor only tells a portion of the story on potentially why. At the time you ran it, it appears that the biggest "user" of CPU was Zoom. In turn, a number of Apple & non-Apple process were running to support Zoom.

To get a better picture of what's going on with your notebook, I suggest that you run an EtreCheck report, and optionally, post it here if you need assistance with interpreting its results. If you are not aware, Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that greatly helps with troubleshooting Mac issues and is developed by a valued forum member.

After giving the report a brief review, here are my observations/suggestions:

  • Your MacBook Air (MBA) is still running macOS High Sierra. However, it is capable of running (currently the latest) macOS Monterey. Upgrading would be a benefit security-wise.
  • Security: Security Updates: Disabled - These should not be disabled and I suggest that you re-enable them.
  • Backup: Time Machine Not Configured! - Unless you have another backup strategy, you should, at least, enable Time Machine to perform periodic backups of your notebook.
  • Virtual Memory Information: Swap Used: 172 MB - At the time of the report, your Mac did not have enough memory to run all of the programs simultaneously. It therefore had to "swap" some apps to your system drive, which reduces the overall performance of the Mac. Since you cannot increase the amount of internal RAM, you will need to run fewer apps simultaneously to avoid the swaps.
  • Clean up: I suggest that you remove any items, identified in this section, from your Mac.
  • Diagnostics Information: You have a number of apps (Steam, Roblox, SSF, etc.) that are using a significant amount of CPU processing. This is definitely one reason that your notebook is "running hot."

Conclusion: Basically your notebook is too underpowered to run the apps that you have installed on it, especially those that are graphics-intensive, simultaneously.

I'm not sure I can trust etrecheck. It is no longer available in the App store, and I read an article stating that it could be malware. (https://sites.google.com/site/howtotellifyourmacishacked/is-etrecheck-malware)

I actually installed and ran it, but I canceled the process and immediately deleted the app because i was reading the article during the time it was scanning.

Please confirm if it is a virus or something.

I'm not planning on upgrading my OS, as some of my apps might not work after at it could lead to a performance loss.

Yes, I have several apps that use a lot of my CPU; those are the games I play. So it is expected that my notebook is hot, but that isn't my issue here.

Are you sure about the Swap used? My swap used goes up to 600MB while working, and I did some research, and it shows that it is normal OS behavior. My memory bar is always at green so I doubt there is anything wrong with my RAM, it's 8GB anyway.

My notebook is not too underpowered to run my apps, it all runs smoothly and I run a few apps in the background normally for a long time now.

My issue is that on the game menu screen my notebook heats up and the fan kicks up a lot but activity monitor says it's only using 40-50% CPU. Normally the CPU temps would only reach above 95c when playing a game. not on the menu screen.

I'm really worried that activity monitor might be giving me a false reading.
