iPhone 14 Pro Battery Draining Fast

Anybody have a clue why the iPhone 14 pro battery is draining like a Samsung? My 13 pro and 13 pro max battery was so much better.. I’m lucky to get through the day with the new 14 pro battery!! What’s going on? Is this because of the new always on display?

Update: The battery is fine. It’s the particular Astronomy Lock Screen and always on display that was killing battery. I guess because the globe rendering is live 3D, the battery drain is higher when combined with always on display. A regular static image doesn’t drain the battery like this.

Well, I can think of a dozen reasons, but without troubleshooting I can’t do more to pin it down. I had rather poor battery performance with my XR, but my 14’s battery performance is outstanding, using less than 25% of the battery energy in an average day.

Things to check:

  • Top of the list is VPN. If you use it and just migrated it over from your old phone I would guess that’s about a 90% probability of being the problem. Delete the profile and app. Then reinstall them. Better yet, don’t reinstall them, because VPN does nothing useful except expose you to identity theft by the VPN provider.
  • Facebook is the world’s largest energy hog.
  • Misconfigured account on your carrier’s side - call them to have your account reconfigured.

Lots of other solutions have been posted in this thread, so it would be helpful to read the other posts.

Given different model phones have different radios, different processors and different displays it's not a straight comparison.

For example your iPhone 14 may be operating on a radio band an earlier iPhone wasn't even capable of using, and 5G bands for example do take more radio power than LTE ones.

Then there's the fact that many third party apps are not yet completely compatible with iOS 16.

Since 16.3 is released I’ve changed 3 14 pro and 1 14 pro max phones (not sure about the color and the size:)) and the same story on all iphones: battery drain increased, battery capacity drops down after reboot. The origin of the phones were Canada, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and some European country. They all ran normal with 16.1 and 16.2. I don’t think this is a hardware iterations. How is it possible? I can’t imagine. I think this is about poor executed 16.3.

I mean software produced by teams who do not have the OS developers on speedcall, and who do not have available intimate knowledge of the nuances of the OS and any changes.

Apple do, as you say, check the software they sell against some criteria. Foremost is that they are not malicious or destructive to user's best interests. The intricate interconnections between applications calling for OS services can only appear when a given combination of software is in place and executing.

How many non-apple authored applications do you have on your phone? How many are active in the background with or without your knowledge?

Android has exactly the same problems, so do all software systems, from the mighty machines that run petaflops a second down to my trusty old Windoze XP.

I invite you to locate the problem by removing software products until the issue goes away.

None of the above being intended to say that there is no issue with the OS, merely that, by definition, every app on your phone is running in fewer places than the OS, so encounters fewer confrontations with system services, and fewer reports of bad behaviour.

Note all of Apple’s battery specs are listed as “up to.”

Their figures have in the past been calculated using media already on the phone, not streaming over Wi-Fi and especially not cellular.

Remember the two biggest power users are the display and the cellular radio, especially if you have two bars or less of signal and even more so if you are connected to a 5G network.

'Find My' is trying to stay in contact with the device location, and with no/not enough cellular signal it's permanently shouting in the wilderness 'Here I am' at full signal strength.

Note it's not just "Find My."

When your phone is in a poor cellular reception area it has to periodically check in with the cellular tower so that the tower knows it's there to send on SMS messages and phone calls.

Then the power usage is even higher if you are in a poor coverage area for 5G, as 5G consumes more power to begin with.

Again, there is zero reason you shouldn't have your phone connected to a charger when you're not actively using it.

As I have said before on this thread, it is a very common reaction to blame the iPhone 14 range and/or iOS16 for poor battery performance and, whilst I sympathise with those who are experiencing this situation, I still believe that such blame is misplaced.

I have a 14 Pro Max which I have been using from new since last November and I use it for just about everything in my life. A typical day will find me listening to music for several hours, using a public transport app giving live departure times, shopping with Wallet and ApplePay, navigating with Maps, reading with Kindle, taking loads of photos and the occasional video, shopping online and spending at least five hours streaming/downloading/watching movies.

I can count the days on the fingers of one hand when I have had less than 50% capacity left in my battery at the close of the day (and never less than 30%). I put my phone on charge around 2100-2200 each evening and unplug it when I wake naturally soon after midnight if it is fully recharged. Battery health is still 100%. I once used the phone for 48hours without recharge just to prove to myself that it could be done. I have always updated the iOS on the first available day.

To me, this suggests that a) there is nothing wrong with the iPhone 14 per se [mine is the same as everyone else's]; b) that there is nothing wrong with iOS16 per se [again, I am using the same iOS as everyone else]; c) that the disappointing battery capacity performance many people have reported, must therefore be due to the factors in which my device differs from theirs, namely the third-party apps that are installed, or the settings that have been activated since our devices were first personalised from new.

These conclusions seem to follow logically from the facts; if the phone or the OS were at fault, it would be experienced by every single user

I really hope that a substantive solution or solutions will be found soon for those who are suffering this syndrome. I wish everyone was experiencing the performance that I have always enjoyed from my 14PM.
