Tried to switch off BT, updated iOS to 16.0.2, no way to fix it.

I called Apple Support: they suggested some things to do (as switch off data connection, reset wifi connections,...) as call Siri and pump up the volume while Siri is talking.

Same low volume problem with all iOS 16.x versions thus far.

Prior iPhone 13 Pro Max functioned normally, including after updating to iOS 16.0.

Haven’t tried CarPlay, since it only works on Subarus with a wired connection, which is inconvenient.

I updated to the new 16.0.3 and am being told that my mic volume has improved some however I’m also told that I sound like I’m talking through a fast food drive through speaker. When I unplug and go to the cars bluetooth, I’m told the call quality sounds be much better.

Update. Using just BT with no wire (so CarPlay is switched off) everything is fine and no hearing issues.

Come on people the temporary work around is simple. Unplug the cord and talk over bluetooth connection. They will release a fix soon. There is no reason to Nuke the phone just be patient.

Seems OK after the new 16.0.3 release.

The issue has been fixed with the latest update for me - iphone14

I have the same issue. I've tried it in several friends cars, wired and wireless CarPlay, its always the same. I've tried resetting the phone, resetting the network settings, etc. Nothing is helping. Its as if they have the car microphone sensitivity setting turned down to about 50%.

The car is bad?Typical Apple answer, so you have to change your $200,000 car to get the Carplay works? I got the same problem with my iPhone 14 Pro Max in my car but my friends and family who got iPhones 13 and below do not have this issue in my car, also I tried my brother's car with my phone and still have the issue.

It's clearly a software issue!

The radio was replaced in my Wagoneer to fix the issue. Still have the problem! Spent hours on the phone with Apple support - they concluded it was a software issue on the phone and that I’d have to wait. Was so disgusted, I went out and bought a Samsung android figuring that would solve the problem. Sadly, no. I give up. Is the car a lemon? But too many people are having this issue. Would be nice to have a definitive answer.

yes, you are right, there are workarounds, including also just using the speaker phone in the phone.

BUT

I think the complaining is justified and necessary

1- Apple hasn't addressed this yet on their own- so they need to be aware of the problem (indeed I spent 90 minutes on tech support and the person tried to blame everything but the problem)

2- Apple is the most valuable company in the world. And these are expensive products. This is just plain unacceptable.

Seems that they broke it in 16.1 as it doesn't work again, sound with Carplay is really low at the listeners end. With this version I am having issues with just the iPhone 14pro max with the volume at the listeners end being really low. You would think that they test these updates before they post them. They know what was fixed with the different versions so they can test those fixes with each update.... it is called regression testing..

My CarPlay has completely muted volume when making a call - I can’t hear a thing.

Also, my calls drop out all the time so I’ve had to switch to 4G from

5G to prevent this (what was the point in upgrading) and my wallpaper has just disappeared twice now & I’ve had to reset it & my Face ID function just stopped working and had to turn the phone off and on again and completely set it up again as though I’d never done it in the first place. Full of glitches. For $2,700 it’s a total disappointment so far (yes that’s what the top of the range costs in Australia). Other issues - the Google app freezes all the time and when voice texting someone using CarPlay (using Siri), if you go to text person A and during that text message mention person B the phone instead changes it to text person B!! So let’s say you say “Hey Siri, send a text to Jenny” and Siri says “what do you want to say?” Then the screen display shows you as texting Jenny. So far so good. And you say “hope you’re ok. Let Josh know I’ll be there at 5” the screen changes that you’re now texting Josh. What the ****? Huge potential ramifications for this bug!

I have exactly the same problem. Previously, the IPhone 12 Pro worked perfectly. The car is a BMW M8

After update 16.0.2 still the problem (Cupra Formentor Seat and Ford Focus). Hope they solve the problem with 16.1
