Always on display does not stay on.

I have an iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 16.01. The always on display is activated. One of the conditions for the display to not stay on is inactivity. If I have the phone facing up not face down, after what seems like a short time to me the screen will go black. The period of inactivity that would turn off the display I thought would be pretty long. It seems like 5 to 10 minutes it goes off. I thought the always on display if left overnight would still be on. Am I wrong about this and how long do people find the display going off after no activity?

The only scenario that could possibly fit is.- You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)

The problem with that is it goes dark in about 15 minutes of activity a lot of times and that's just a little bit too soon to be called always on. One question, if the phone is in a dark room is it possible it thinks it's been put in a pocket?

If you tell me that when I describe above is normal I'll accept it. Thanks for your response and your attention to this new question.

Hello archrider,

We understand that you have questions about the "Always-On" display feature with iPhone 14 model devices.

Reviewing Use Always-On display with your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max - Apple Support there is a section that discusses specific scenarios for when the display will go dark. To any of these fit with what you're experiencing?

Always-On display goes dark when you don't need it

To save battery life, the display is completely dark when:

- Your iPhone is lying face down
- Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
- Sleep Focus is on
- Low Power Mode is on
- Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
- You're using Continuity Camera
- You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
- Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)

Best regards.

Hey archrider,

Be sure to update to iOS 16.0.2 and see if this has any impact on the issue. Updating can fix issues that you see on your device. Here’s how to update:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. Choose the software update that you want to install. You can choose to stay on iOS or iPadOS 15 and still get important security updates. Or you can choose the option to upgrade to iOS or iPadOS 16.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now.

Update your iPhone or iPad

Also, turn Always-On off on your iPhone in Settings > Display & Brightness. Restart your iPhone and turn it back on. See if the issue is resolved. This can sometimes fix issues like this one as well.

Take care.
