Why is my right airpod microphone cutting in and out during calls

I have 2nd generation AirPods that I’ve been using since November 2021. They are updated to the latest firmware version 4E71. I use them with an iPhone 11 Pro Max on the latest software version 15.6.1

I use them individually (left or right) as a hands free Bluetooth earphone for phone calls when at work on a daily basis. I will alternate their use each day so they ‘wear and tear’ evenly.

They have both been working perfectly up until about a week or two ago, when I noticed that only the right AirPod microphone will malfunction during a phone call (regardless if cellular or data) where the other party says my voice is either really low or fading in and out.

I have read that the Bluetooth connection can be interrupted by other radio channel/ WiFi signals, and I have confirmed that, as when I’m driving it works fine, but the minute I’m inside a building (with WiFi) it gives trouble.

What I don’t understand is why has it been working perfectly fine for the past ten months, and now all of a sudden it’s malfunctioning.

Nothing significant has changed in my environment to say that could be contributing to the issue. Has there been a recent software update that could cause this to happen?

Hello Nattydred246,

If you're using the AirPods one at a time and the microphone on one of them does not work, you'll want to make sure you have both microphones enabled. Go to Settings > Bluetooth > Info button next to the AirPods name, then under the Microphone section make sure it is set to Automatic.

Change the settings of your AirPods and AirPods Pro

If one of the microphones is still not working, you can also try resetting the AirPods with these steps:

  1. "Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid of your charging case.
  4. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Bluetooth, or Settings > [your AirPods], and tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods. If you don't see your AirPods in Settings > Bluetooth or in Settings > [your AirPods], just go to the next step.
  5. Tap Forget This Device, and tap again to confirm.
  6. With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*"

How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro

If that still hasn't resolved it, you can find available service options for AirPods here: AirPods Replacement, Repair, & Service

Cheers!
