AirPod Pros Require me to re-pair in order to reconnect

Usually when using Airpod Pros, that have previously been connected, you simply remove the Pros from the case, put them in your ear, and the sound goes from the iPhone Speaker straight to the air pods.

After having the airpods out of the case for a day(unused so they still had battery) I returned them to the case to charge fully, then tried to use them and they wouldn't connect.

After going through a few trial and errors, I have to 'forget' my Pros from the bluetooth menu, and re-pair/re-connect them in order to use them. But once they switch from the Pros back to the iPhone speaker, then I have to repeat the process. If I try to put them in my ear again, nothing happens from the phones or the Pros. If I try to manually pair them in the bluetooth menu, it fails. I have to manually go through the process of unpairing them and pairing them again. Anybody know what could be the issue?

Hello RIPTravey,

Forgetting the connection and pairing your AirPods again is a great step to help resolve this connection issue. In addition to that step, there are additional troubleshooting steps specific to resolving connection related issues. Those steps are listed below and can be found in the following article.

  1. "Make sure that your iPhone or iPod touch has the latest version of iOS or that your iPad has the latest version of iPadOS.
  2. Put both AirPods in the charging case and make sure that both AirPods are charging.
  3. To make sure that Bluetooth is on, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
  4. If your AirPods are connected, make sure that they're selected as your audio device. If your AirPods appear in the list of devices but they don't connect, go to the next step.
  5. Close the lid, wait 15 seconds, then open the lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the charging case for up to 10 seconds. The status light on the front of the charging case should flash white, which means that your AirPods are ready to connect.
  6. Hold the charging case, with your AirPods inside and the lid open, next to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  7. Follow the steps on the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  8. Test your AirPods. If you still can't connect, reset your AirPods."

So I just want to clarify that my issue is not about being able to have my Pros and my iPhone being connected. I can and have followed almost everything you have suggested(minus the most up to date iOS) and I am able to make the two connect every time. This does not resolve my issue of having to do this every single time I want to stop using them and use them again.

For example, I was grocery shopping and had to take the air pods out to speak to the cashier. I then have to put the air pod pros back in the case, wait 15 or so seconds, go to my phone and forget the airpods pros from my bluetooth menu, then open my case by my phone, reconnect them, and then I can use them again. A whole almost minute situation, when I should be able to just pop them back in and press play and start listening again.

I have tried everything that you have said minus updating to iOS 16 because my phone is having some difficulties updating. The link you gave me, said all I need is iOS 13.2 or later, which I have 15, but I will continue trying to upgrade and let you know how that works.

We understand the issue is with the AirPods not reconnecting as expected, RIPTravey.

We can assure you that the steps previously listed are accurate for reaching a resolution although the article reference not being able to connect at all, and you're on the right track with continuing to update iOS. When having issues updating iOS, you'll want to complete the steps outlined in the article below. These steps are specific to resolving update related issues. It may lead to removing and downloading the update again. If it leads there, those steps are listed below.

  1. "Go to Settings > General > [Device name] Storage.
  2. Find the update in the list of apps.
  3. Tap the update, then tap Delete Update.
  4. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the latest update.

If you don't see the update in the list of apps or if the issue happens again, you need to update your device with your computer:

Learn how to use recovery mode if your computer doesn't recognize your device or your screen is stuck on the Apple logo for several minutes without a progress bar.
