Why did my iPhone 14 screen go black?

My new iPhone 14pro max has a black screen this morning following its regular overnight charge. I have tried the reset and it is now plugged in via a cord hoping this will work. Anyone else had this issue?

FYI, 16.0.2 did NOT fix the problem on my 14 Pro as hoped. I put it back on my wireless charger last night for the first time since my overnight BSOD a week ago. When I woke up this morning, it was clear the phone had rebooted (passcode required; different home screen widgets showing). I opened the battery app and found it had been unresponsive for 3 hours overnight, then re-booted itself. My first BSOD occurrence while charging overnight was similar but never rebooted. This is really annoying...

Black Screen of Death

BTW, there's a 300+ post on Reddit discussing the issue. It seems to be highly correlated with charging, especially overnight charging, both wired and wireless. There are a couple of cases where this happened while not charging, but those seem rare. I'm surprised it hasn't appeared in the press yet. The Click Vol Up, Click Vol Down, Hold Sleep button until logo appears (up to a minute or two!) fix seems to revive the phone in all cases I've seen...

Hello Toooldforthis33

This has happened to me several times, since I bought my iPhone 14 Pro. Your phone is not dead. The screen brightness turned itself all the way down, to black. There’s a quick and easy solution to restore the brightness, on your screen.

On your iPhone 14, press and hold the button on the right side of the phone - It will engage Siri.

Ask Siri to turn up the brightness - literally say, “Turn up the Brightness.” Even though the screen is black, a slider will appear on the screen.

Slide the slider, to the right, to turn up the brightness on the screen.

It won’t stop the issue from happening again, but it works. You won’t have to reboot your phone.

I was having this issue, and the vol-up, vol-down, side button fix stopped working for me, the iPhone was just a brick and nothing I did worked.

I eventually got back to the UK and took it to an Apple Store. They plugged it in and eventually got it to turn on, I’m not sure exactly how, it did take about 10 minutes.

Once on we made a backup of the data and reset the device back to factory settings. Then ran through the device set-up again and restored the data from the backup.

I'm not sure how important it is but when I first got the device I originally set it up by holding it near my old phone and having it do an auto-setup from the previous device, this time I set it up from the backup.

Also, after some discussion with the Apple guy he told me he’d seen iPhone 14 devices have problems where the image on the Home/Lock Screen is a custom image. My device does have a custom image on the Lock and Home Screens (same image on both). Once my device had finished setting up I checked (press and hold the Lock Screen to see this) and the device showed that the custom image was no longer in my Photos folder and couldn’t be found on the cloud. The image was still showing on the Lock/Home Screens and looked fine but the link to the original image was gone (I do remember deleting it, assuming I didn’t need to keep it).

I’m not sure why the device even reported that it had lost the link to the original image, but since it was reporting it and the Apple guy said this might be a problem I changed to a standard Apple image for both Lock and Home Screen.

I’ve also switched off Raise To Wake.

I don’t know which of the following fixed the issue but it’s been 2 months now and the phone’s worked flawlessly

  • Reset and restore from backup
  • Changing the Home/Lock Screen to non-custom
  • Removing Raise To Wake

Hopefully this helps other for whom the vol-up, vol-down, side button fix doesn’t work.

The same thing (froze black screen after overnight charging) just happened to my iPhone 14 pro this morning. I tried the Apple’s standard restart protocol but my iPhone was still “dead.”

So I did the hard reset by pressing/holding down volume and power buttons for a minute also. I got a plug-in-cable-to -computer “RESTORE” screen . I connected my iPhone with my laptop (support.Apple.Com/screen/restore)

Then my iPhone came back with normal sceeen.

I never had this problem with my iPhone 14 pro before latest iOS update iOS 16.4.1 (a).

This has happened a couple of times with my iPhone 14 Max Pro. I always keep the iOS up to date and there has been at least one, if not two updates between the first and second incidents, so whatever the cause, it either has not been resolved in the most recent update, or is down to some other issue with the firmware or hardware.

On both occasions, the BSOD occurred whilst charging overnight via cable and on both occasions, the issue was resolved by the - quick squeeze volume Up, quick squeeze volume Down and long squeeze on the right side button until the Apple logo appears - technique, though it took several attempts on the second occasion. Timing the squeezes seems to be critical, with ‘quick’ the operative word.

Hi everyone.

I woke up this morning and found out that this had happened to my iPhone 14 pro max. The tip of volume up/down then hold the power button worked after a few tries (thankfully), but what I'm amazed at is that this was first reported 2 months ago and still hasn't been fixed by Apple. It's the first time this has happened to an iPhone of mine (and I've had them all!), but come on Apple, this should be fixed by now.

The first time this happened on my Iphone 14, the reset worked (volume buttons, then hold power button for a long time). It just happened again this morning when i took it off USB charger. Reset did not work. Tried 3-4 times . Finally, after holding power button for a long long time, a message popped up that showed message to connect phone to computer. When i connected to computer it said I needed update to firmware. Said 9 minutes remaining. We will see if this is a permanent fix.

Happened to me while my 14 pro max was charging. In the morning noticed the “always awake” or whatever you call it screen was completely black. Used a different charger, tried resetting it nothing. Then found the volume up, volume down, then hold down side power button and it worked after a few seconds. Caused a panic, but luckily was an easy fix
