iPhone 14 Camera is Blurry

My brand new iPhone 14 Pro Max’s camera is blurry whenever attempting to take close up pictures in 3rd party apps like Amazon, Target, Walmart (ie barcode scans). Phone is brand new out the box, updated to latest iOS (16.0.2), and have reinstalled the apps.

Anyone else with this issue?

All I can say is I've had iPhones for over 10 years and I've never had the issues with the camera, both native and third-party apps and accessing the camera as I've had now with the new iPhone 14 Pro. Look at the picture attached. I made it this morning using the native camera unfortunately due to the focal distance, the iPhone could not figure out which camera to use and kept switching back-and-forth and ended up with a blurry picture. That is an issue with the iOS that did not exist before this version of the iPhone. I am seriously considering going back to an iPhone 13 as the issues did not exist with that phone.

Many thanks for all your comments. I think like me, many expect their IPhone 14 pro max to have additional features and not lose some of the basic functionality from previous models.

Just using the camera on its own proves no issue at under an inch. The issue as did river is with third party apps. All of which worked previous but now do not. Apple has done something ( way above my head) with the programming and I think we all agree that is the issue that has to be addressed. With their high levels of programming I believe we all expect a fix. Not to have to play about with settings to allow 3rd party apps to work again.

You don't have to play with settings, but the fact remains that the only people who can fix third party apps are in fact those third parties. If you have an app that is currently failing, make sure to notify the app's maker so they know there is an issue.

Many third parties are improving their apps' bar code scanning functionality to properly work with newer iPhones; as I mentioned at least some third party apps that used to have issues now read bar and QR codes properly.

Also, I did watch the Apple presentation. In reference to the barcode scanning part of the video: I find it a little disappointing that they don't show how to take advantage of the different camera lenses but rather tell us to "zoom in if it's not in focus, and tell the user to hold the device farther away." Clearly their own camera app will swap lenses if something is not in focus because it's too close, so I do wish they would have shown us how to access that functionality instead.

By “not choosing cameras” I meant you shouldn’t select based upon what you (as the developer, not as your app) know about available cameras but rather based upon characteristics reported by the API. In that way whether the device has one camera or twelve, you will get the most appropriate.

This is different than the old approach and may be why frameworks have yet to catch up, and why native iOS development is always best but obviously isn’t always possible.

if you find out how to block them please let me know, I’d like to block them too.

In the uk we have consumer law that ensures that software that comes with a device (such as iOS) has to work as intended and without flaws that can prevent certain use.

I’m ascertaining this consumer right. I have offered to take the phone in to the regent street Apple Store next week but support have not responded to my complaint and refuse to do so by email (even though they gave me their emails to make contact). They’ve not confirmed or accepted my offer to take the phone in for me to demonstrate the issue which is unacceptable.

Different minimum focus distances due to different lenses and larger sensors.

That doesn’t make the old cameras “better” unless you’re trying to focus at something closer than the minimum focus distance.

The James Webb Space Telescope can’t focus on something three inches away, that doesn’t make it a worse lens than the one in an iPhone 7.

„There is no fix and apple are censoring replies to this thread“

Yes, they deleted a post of mine, too. In the other hand, you can’t find a way to report someone who is spamming this thread so that nobody who is in trouble, can find answers, after you get annoyed by the spam. The reason, why I won’t take part at the discussion anymore.

You also need a macro lens when you buy a $6000 mirrorless camera.

The newer cameras use a larger sensor to improve low light performance, but the laws of physics state that means the minimum focus distance will also increase.

That means a switch to the macro lens which can focus at a closer distance.

The same occurs with other premium multi-lens smartphones like those from Google and Samsung.

I had the same experience taking pics in dim light also blurry for both close up pics and further away. If apple doesn't admit this is an issue and get it fixed soon I will be returning it and switching phones. They advertised this camera as being so wonderful and so far I prefer my XR's camera by far! I do not recommend the 14 until this issue is fixed, the camera is trash as it is now.

It doesn't matter if it appears blurry to you, the app will be able to read the bar code with no issues once you get the camera far enough away from the bar code.

The app will instantly recognize the bar code and will take the appropriate action no matter how it looks to you.

I do this every day.

Just slowly move the phone away from the bar code and it will eventually read just fine.
