My brand new iPhone 14 Pro Max’s camera is blurry whenever attempting to take close up pictures in 3rd party apps like Amazon, Target, Walmart (ie barcode scans). Phone is brand new out the box, updated to latest iOS (16.0.2), and have reinstalled the apps.
Anyone else with this issue?

You are correct, there is usually no hardware issue as it works as designed, third parties need to update their apps as stated.
There are several third-party apps that work perfectly scanning bar codes on the 14 Pro Max, as does the QR scanning ability that is now part of the Camera app.

The Code Scanner that Apple provides in Control Center also works perfectly, the key is not to try to force the block to fill the square but rather back the phone up until the QR code is in sharp focus and the scanner will read it instantly.
This obviously won’t work but backing the phone up a few inches/several cm until the code is in sharp focus will, every time.
If it doesn’t work for you, then there may be something wrong with your device; I recently visited an Apple Store and it worked with every iPhone 14 they had on display, too.
The interesting thing is the Camera app will switch to the macro lens to be able to focus more closely where the Code Reader app instead requires you to hold the phone further away so it can focus.
Thanks at least we now have action by Apple rather than comments which are not helping.
it would be helpful if more people contacted Apple to ensure this is moved up the list of issues to be addressed.

Nope. Lots of codes just don’t work, I’ve been trying the same one for the last 30mins , moving slowly up and down, to the point where it feels like this is some elaborate joke
unbelieveable that such a simple QR code reading error exists on breaks new tech like this
I should add, the camera can take clearer photos close in, but they don’t work the same as a qr reader obviously
Mate, you can keep saying the same thing over and over, but the reality is there is an entire thread of people here that have an issue you claim to not exist. Apple has even opened a case to look into it.

I've had the same issue on QR codes in 2 venues and a recipe book, all inside the last week, having had this phone for less than 2 weeks

Yes, completely not Apple's fault since they were the ones to disable the automatic switching 🙄 There wasn't an issue until they removed the automatic switching. They knew the focal point is going to cause issues, otherwise they wouldn't have had the automatic switching in there - until they have removed it without telling anyone.
You don't understand, it was automatically enabled for all apps before 16.0.2. A bug lead to camera shake so they disabled it altogether.
There indeed is so many threads on reddit on this issue. None on 16.0.0 because on 16.0.0 it was fine.

Only Apple's 16.0.x updates have disabled the camera switching in third-party apps.
No need to worry; if something is wrong with your phone, Apple will either repair or replace the entire device.
The process is quick and easy.
the same issue with apple's own wallet app, not focussing so cannot add cards on the new phone using the camera.
there is no fix, I have returned my phone and will hope the 15 resolves the issue. I have returned to my old 12 which is absolutely fine.
I have scanned codes as small as 1/2” square with no issues.
It’s just a matter of getting far enough away.
If you want to report your issue to Apple:
I have yet to find a third party app that wont scan a code or a QR code that won’t scan in third-party apps or by using Camera.
That is not correct. There was a automatic switching in all apps when I received my iPhone 14 Pro.
Brought my concern to my Apple Store and they confirmed others (including employees) have the same issue. However, even after Amazon and Target app updates (today, 9/27), their developers and Apple’s still didn’t resolve the issue!
Let’s go, Apple: put out a statement/fix to app developers ASAP.

Then link me the part where it informs about the camera API changes. Pro tip: You can't, because there is none and that renders the rest of your comment invalid. You describe how you think it works, but you can check for yourself that it doesn't work like you think it works on that very page that you have linked.
What you have linked is new in iOS 16.0, not 16.0.1, 16.0.2 etc.
Patches don't have API changes in them.
I appreciate that you have taken a moment to search for something that fits, but this doesn't fit. There is no camera announcement for the patches. No matter how hard you try, you unfortunately won't find any to support your claim.
