intermittent clock ticking sounds on iMac

I can't figure out what is causing the clicking sound while my iMac is sleeping. It goes on for on for a short while and stops. But in a few minutes it starts again. System is running latest updates, using Nord VPN and Malwarebytes. I am using time machine but it is solid state drive.

iMac 24″, macOS 12.6

What year model is your iMac and what macOS is it running?

As a test, try the following Energy Saver settings



then sleep or shutdown from the Apple dropdown menu at night.
