Preference of .MP4, NOT .MOVPKG formatted movies

There seems to be an increasing number of movies I download in the ".movpkg" format. Movie files downloaded in this format will not appear or stream on my Apple TV from my iMac. Is there a way to ensure ONLY the standard ".mp4" files are downloaded?! Or can these be converted to ".mp4" type files?

As I have many (over 700) movies that I long ago ripped from my originally purchased DVD collection, and the subsequent purchased iTunes movies (over 1300), it is good to be able to watch them ALL in the same manner, rather than using one AppleTV app to watch the ripped ones and another to watch the purchased ones. Having the ".movpkg" format makes this an impossibility and an annoyance.

I'm running a 2021 M1 iMac (Ventura 13.0) and have 4k AppleTV's (Version 16.1). All systems are running the latest O/S as of this date. So please explain how I can ensure the RIGHT format for download or somehow force the correct version is downloaded. This used to work fine on my 2015 iMac (Monterey 12.16) on same AppleTV's.

Help!!

I have the same issue. 4K movie purchases through Apple are supposed to include a downloadable HD version of the film. In the past, that HD version of the file was always in the .mp4 format. Recently I purchased the 4K version of the film 'Saboteur' directed by Alfred Hitchcock and the format of the downloaded file was .movpkg instead of .mp4. Like the original post says, the .movpkg version prevents the movie from streaming locally from one of my own HDDs. That defeats the purpose of having the HD version of the file. It's supposed to be something that can be viewed without streaming from Apple's servers.

Precisely! The "cloud" is a cool thing for some stuff, but what happens when the net is down (for any number of reasons)? I don't like being dependent upon something over which I have no control, particularly when it keeps me from viewing something I have PURCHASED, which is technically MINE. Call me a control freak, but I like my movies in my possession and playable regardless of net connectivity. Need a way to ensure I can get the .MP4 versions, even if it means using a computer running an O/S from the dark side (Windows), as some have suggested.

IMO, they need to provide the file type information for the HD download within the listing that customers are viewing. If it's important to know whether Dolby Atmos or closed captioning is available with the purchase, then it's also important to know if the HD download is in a format that will provide both audio/video offline (.mp4, .m4v) OR in a format like .movpkg that will only provide audio offline.

So, all that I'm asking is that I want to just download the HD versions in .MP4 as I have always been able to for that past decade, not SD otherwise why bother having a HD/4k AppleTV unit. HD was always available in .MP4, so why not now. I've tried all the iTunes (now TV) settings that some have suggested about "most compatible" or "download multichannel", to no avail.

Or do I have to go back to the dark side and get another Windows box just to get proper downloads?

I have 2508 movies, 1113 Ripped, 1396 iTunes downloads (of which one is .MOVPKG so it doesn't show up in the overall "Library", else the count would be 2509. All .MP4 movies show up under the Library app, but only those which are downloaded from iTunes show in the Movies app (obviously). I'm only concerned with ALL movies showing up in Library, of which .MOVPKG files do not do.

So to watch any .MOVPKG movies I have to go to Movies. Not that it's a huge issue but less convenient to locate a particular movie if this becomes more prevalent.

Sorry for what might appear to be a rant, just trying to be as explicit as possible. Thank you for any help.

I do not see a workaround for this on Monterey. I have an iMac from Oct 2019 luckily is one the last that supports Mohave. I formatted an external HDD and boot to Mohave and use iTunes from there. I cannot find any other workaround.

You don't need to buy a PC especially if your Mac is compatible with Mohave or older. You can still just run VMware for Mac and do it that way.

No easy solution. Supposedly MOVPKG are lossless compressed, that's why Apple is switching over. PC users don't have this problem since they can only run iTunes.

You can still download w/ iTunes on your iPhone since at least iOS15 still has iTunes app (I am waiting to upgrade to 16 when 16.1 is released). We know that's quite painful if you have a large collection and wireless data cap.
