Why is my iPhone 14 Pro causing headache, nausea and eye strain? PWM Complaint...

Hello,

I purchased an iPhone 14 Pro recently. Ever since using it, I have fallen ill with nausea, headaches and eye strain. Even after using for sure durations (5-10 minutes).

Based on my research, this is due to the PWM (Pulse Wave Modulation) flickering which happens in iPhones (and other phones) with AMOLED screens which use PWM to dim the screen.

I currently use an iPhone 11 (standard) - which has an LCD screen with none of these issues.

Is Apple looking into any ways to fix this problem? Or at very least, continue to release phones with LCD screens for those of use with this issue? The only other phone option with LCD and 5G is the iPhone SE 2022...which is a smaller screen phone.

Thank you.

So glad I’m not the only one having this issue. My family thinks I’m crazy. I was so excited to get the iPhone pro max and loved the phone except that I can’t stand to be near it. Horrible headache and sensation on my skin crawling. I don’t think it’s the screen. It can be sitting on a table in the same room and it causes my symptoms.

You expect Apple to do more "what" exactly. You have a medical condition, which makes the screen technology cause you issues. What exactly do you expect Apple to do for you? Don't buy a Samsung OLED phone. Don't buy a Google OLED phone. Don't buy ANY phone with OLED technology. And Samsung, nor Google, nor anyone else can solve this for you. Because you have a medical condition.

If you have a food allergy, what do you do? You don't eat a food which you are allergic too. Should the people who grow peanuts for example, which some people are allergic to, have some responsibility to do something for them, so they can eat peanuts? Of course not.

Your expectation of "more" is unrealistic.

I am not acting as if you knew you had this issue. You clearly have an issue. And that's unfortunate for you. What I'm suggesting is your expectation that Apple can or should do more for you now that you know you have this issue is simply unrealistic.

You came here angry and accusing Apple of not doing anything for you. To expect something more from them is just not a reasonable expectation. And that is all I'm trying to tell you.

not to mention your example is off. If the peanuts were fine and then were genetically modified or had something new added to them then they are labeled as such and consumers know to avoid the peanuts with the changes or ingredients. I had no idea this was an issue for me. hopefully more people will become aware of the OLED issue and won’t buy phones they can’t use. If I had know or was aware I wouldn’t be asking these questions. Hopefully this helps someone else and saves them the time and trouble

I can't cater to anyone and you are not writing anyone from Apple on this user to user only forum.

I haven't heard of genetically modified peanuts, so if there are such nuts, OK. Let's change the analogy to shellfish, which some people are highly allergic too. I'm not aware there are any genetically modified shellfish for people with shellfish allergies.

And this is my last comment. I've made my points abundantly clear here.

To anyone saying limit screen time and go to Doctor , it is all nonsense . PWM is a real issue and i am one of those affected by this , i used iphone X for 1 year and ignored constant headaches and now i have permanent migraine , i am stuck on iphone 11 for past 3 years now , i even tried 14 pro but still the same problem , i get instant headaches , dizziness. Too bad that apple isn't doing anything to fix this , may be just add a DC dimming under accessibility even though it compromises some color , I will take that any day over this bad headache and health issues.

I know multiple people who have issues with OLED screens. For some it’s mild and just annoying at times. I think a lot more people than is reported are having issues with these screens and apple should address it. People are coming here for advice and to see if anyone else is experiencing these symptoms. Anyhow, I’ve used an iPhone going way back to the 4. I had the 4s. The 5, The 5c, 7, 7plus, XR, 12mini, 13, 13mini, 14 plus and now the SE 3. I started noticing issues with eye strain, nausea and migraines with the 12 mini. I didn’t realize all this time it was my phone until I got the 14 Plus. It’s frustrating. My son n law is seizure prone & multiple people in his family have epilepsy and the OLED screens can trigger seizures for them. I have issues with migraines and believe the flickering triggers my migraines. Same for my daughter. I have friends who complain about irritated eyes and mild headaches and it corresponds to their iPhone use. This is a bigger issue than people realize.

Sudden, severe headaches, especially those connected with behavioral or mood changes, can be a sign of something serious. Please see your doctor as soon as possible.

dude, stop spreading nonsense here.

Of course, Apple has a huge leverage over Samsung display manufacturing because they are their biggest customer. If they want they can force them to put more efforts into solving PWM issue. In the worst case they can switch to another manufacture who can solve it.

You are also wrong about a huge cost it would require to solve the issue. Chinese manufacturers already addressed it and produce phones with OLED screens which have PWM at 2000 or even 3000 Hz. There are many reviews of these phones from PWM sensitive people who confirmed that it solved the issue for them. And these Huawei/Honor/Vivo phones cost less than iPhones!!

So, the issue can be solved. It is just that Apple doesn't consider it significant enough.

Exactly. Many people just don't know what causes it. For example, they may think that it is simply because their eyes get tired from reading. As it would be from reading a book. But the truth it - they wouldn't get that much severe eye strain or wouldn't get as fast if they used PWM-free screens. More people know about the issue - the faster manufacturers will address it in order to keep the customers.

And here we are again with the new iPhone 15 models. Should I stay with my 11 and avoid nausea, migraines and headaches? Or should I venture again like when I got the 13 and had to return it due to all of that? I will wait and see if anyone that gets the 15 experiences the same, and switches back to 11 again. It sounds harsh but I will come back here and see.
