Pixelated screen using Apple CarPlay

This is not a new topic here, as far as I see, I think it is the right thing to open this discussion for those of you having new generation cars from the VW group:

The Apple CarPlay problems are not only on Honda models. My Skoda Octavia 4 (VW MIB3 Infotainment System) has the same problem.

When using navigation apps (Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps) on both my iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 7, after a while, the navigation part of the screen is getting blurry.

Both iPhones have the newest updates, the car also. Restarting the iPhones or the car infotainment system doesn’t help.

You can refresh the blurred screen by changing shortly to a car menu and then back to Apple CarPlay. This holds for a while (5-10 Minutes) and then you go again.

I can still confirm after weeks of driving that SW update 1896 (or higher) definitely solves this problem!

For months my dealer also mentioned that there was no SW update listed for my car but instead I threw in other infotainment issues like "reboots frequently" and "faults" until the dealer finally wanted to update to 1896. Very frustrating but very happy that this issue is finally resolved and hope all of you reading this topic can benefit from this info.

How different car manufacturers technically "embed" Car Play or Android Auto may differ. Some car manufacturers may have tested it also a bit better or way in advance.

I think the worst case would be when the "embedding" is hardware-based only. Then manufacturers will have two choices - replace those modules physically in all cars or beg Apple to make changes on their key technology decisions, to keep it backward compatible.

Out of all options, I really hope it's Apple's bug :)

Apple Carplay is a product offered by Apple. They offer minimum requirements for car manufacturers to adhere too so it would work. If it suddenly doesn't work anymore for various brands, they at minimum have a responsibility to investigate and make sure their min reqs for using apple carplay are up to date. You trying to make it seem like they are not responsible or at minimum responsible to help finding a fix, does not help anybody. I think several people (including me) have also contacted the car manufacturer, but that doesn't mean Apple should not (help) investigate this.

@Daften, totally agree with you, the ecosystem is created and maintained by Apple, so they should take the lead in the investigation. And probably I've been lucky @CharlesEA, having at least Apple Maps working. Probably it depends on phone and head-unit combination. I'm suffering the problem before it widespreaded, and it is almost passed a year. The reality is that the end-user experience (me) has been terrible, and I'm disappointed to have been abandoned.

I opened a thread 6 months ago, on Waze Forums, asking a Product Manager to investigate the issue. I'm still here...

However guys, we can still all get back to Nokia 3310. Indestructible, no car integration, no apps, no issues. Nice games.

I have a Honda Jazz , but not an inbuilt media system. It’s a Pioneer after market, so maybe that’s the answer.

My VW Caddy has been back into the service centre and they couldn’t fault find it and were going to contact VW main office to find out more about the problem . But maybe if this is definitely an Apple issue there is little point them having it back in again ???

What a faff for something that shouldn’t even be happening in the first place. I have tried your workaround and it fixes it for about 5 minutes and then it starts all over again and again and again . If I’m in Central London concentrating on traffic and trying to navigate , everything suggested is a compete NO No.

So either Apple have to fix it or VW. I’ve had my car for 18 months and the same IPhone 11 for longer, and up till 2 months ago it was perfect. So why has it all changed ??

If it’s something on the headunit makers side then we can hope that they will be able to figure it out before the cars warranty expire. Last time my car was in the dealership’s repairshop for a 6 hour update cycle - they enabled wireless android auto since the unit was created without the function - they pushed a 30GB update to it, so we can forget OTA. The manufacturers gods help us, they will get there in time otherwise it will be broken forever…
