Bluetooth drops connection to my hearing aids from my iPad, but not my iMac or iPhone

I'm trying to listen to audio from my iPad Air, but I've never gotten it to work. I can get audio from my iMac and iPhone to my hearing aids with no problem.

I deselect the hearing aids from the iMac by clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, and then clicking on "R-Phonak hearing aid", and insure that the text dims. I do the same for the iPhone. I put both the iPhone and iMac to sleep, and then try to use the iPad to get audio.

In Setting/Bluetooth, I select "LE_R-Phonak hearing aid", and the connection is made. But after a few seconds the connection is lost and "Not Connected" is displayed again.

I've paired and un-paired the hearing aids from the iPad and restarted the iPad multiple times. I've also tried turning off Settings/Accessibility/Hearing Aid Compatibility. I am out of ideas.

It would be very useful to be able to select a desired Bluetooth device and tell it to drop any other Bluetooth devices. Having to be sure the other devices are not using the Bluetooth connection is a real pain when going back and forth from my iPhone to my iMac.

Is there anything else I can try?

Yes, I've tried that multiple times, and thank you for your response. Your response did prompt me to try another procedure. I followed the instructions on Phonak's website:

https://product-support.phonak.com/s/article/How-to-repair-connection-issues-with-the-myPhonak-app-on-iPhone?language=en_US

This procedure works fine for the iPhone, and I thought I would use the same procedure for the iPad, but no joy. No sound was streamed to the hearing aids, and the connection from the iPad to the hearing aids was dropped after a few seconds.

Here are the instructions from Phonak:

How to repair connection issues ocurring with myPhonak on iPhone

Sometimes a connection to the hearing aids cannot be established after an app update, an OS update of the smartphone, or when the fitting of the hearing aids has changed. In this case, a full reset of the app is recommended which includes the deletion of the Bluetooth® pairings and any Bluetooth settings:

1. Close the app and uninstall the app from the smartphone.

2.Go to Bluetooth settings in the smartphone.

3. On the list of paired devices, find the two or three items representing the user hearing aids.

Please note that the third listed item is for the phone call / streaming functionality.

4. Click on each of the paired devices and unpair them.

5. Install the myPhonak app again from App Store.

6. Follow the onboarding instructions until reaching the Home section. Then press "Pair device".

7. Follow the pairing instructions.

8. When reaching the screen with "Connect your hearing aids to myPhonak", restart the hearing aids. Instructions for this can be found in the screen.

9. Click “Continue” in the app and the pairing will start, follow the instructions until reaching screen saying "Pairing complete!"

10. If the user wants to enable phone calls, audio streaming and Tap Control this can be set up by pressing "OPTIONAL SETTINGS" and follow the instructions.

11. The hearing aids should now be successfully paired.

While Phonak does not support MFi (Made For iPhone), which is any iDevice, iPhone, iPad,iPod, they are bluetooth native and should work with any Apple Device that supports bluetooth. Like you pointed out he reason they work with your iMac and iPhone is standard bluetooth. They should also work with your iPad using native bluetooth. Hearing aids that only use MFi have to use extra devices to connect with your iMac or MacBook. You might want to check with your audiologist to see if there is a new firmware update for your current hearing aids that effects bluetooth issues.

I was incorrect when I replied to your question. I didn't actually turn off Bluetooth on the iPhone and iMac. I did disable the connection, but left Bluetooth on. It seems that your suggestion would have worked. I disabled the hearing aids from the iMac by clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, and then clicking on the "R-Phonak hearing aid". The text was black and would then turn gray. That wasn't enough.

I received a nice, informative email from Phonak. Basically they said that my hearing aids are their first generation direct-connect Bluetooth devices for audio streaming and the limitation is to one device.

To receive audio from my iPad, I would have to forget the hearing aids from the iPhone and iMac, or turn off Bluetooth on both devices, and then pair the iPad.

So, it's doable, but I doubt I'll go through the process. I wouldn't want to disable the iPhone connection in case a phone call comes in.

Thanks so much for your help.
