Safari Tabs

When I drag a Safari tab to create a new window it remains in the previous window but fades out like it's not active. So in the event, I close the tab out on the original window it closes it on the new window as well. I hope that makes sense. I keep multiple tabs open on Safari and never had this issue until recently.

I have been having this issue since the day I received my new M1 MacBook Pro in August. It appears that the issue has been fixed in Safari 16.2, but getting that update is a little easier said than done, especially if you don't want to upgrade to Ventura for some reason (for me, certain software is not yet guaranteed compatible in Ventura, so I am holding out). If you are still running Safari 16.0 and don't want to upgrade McOS to Ventura for some reason, you will not see available safari updates in the App Store nor in the software update tool in your system preferences. You can, however, update safari directly from the command line. Here are the steps:

  1. Quit Safari
  2. Open Terminal
  3. type the following command: softwareupdate -l -a | grep Safari
  4. Press Enter
  5. You should get output that looks something like the following:

Label: Safari16.2MontereyAuto-16.2

Title: Safari, Version: 16.2, Size: 130909KiB, Recommended: YES

Once you have the output, you just need to follow the following steps:

  1. type the following command: softwareupdate -i <TEXT OF LABEL>
  2. Given the output above, the command would be: softwareupdate -i Safari16.2MontereyAuto-16.2
  3. Press enter
  4. Done, Safari is now updated. Open safari and in the menu go to Safari>About Safari to confirm.

Once I did this and updated to 16.2, no more issues. I hope this helps!

Setup M1 Laptop+External screen, Ventura 13.0.1, Safari 16.1:

Having the same issue and also an issue where dragging the tab off 1 window to another freezes the image of the dragged tab (not the entire window or tab contents, just the part you drag between windows) at some random point on the screen.

For example, today, I tried to consolidate a tab from one Safari window to another. The tab image dragged from one window to another, made space in the tab bar of the new window, and when I released it, it did not open in the new window, but rather the dragged tab image just froze onto the screen above the Safari window. The window I was dragging it to remained operational (can be moved, can move between tabs on it, etc.), but the tab image for the dragged tab remained frozen on the screen as a remnant until Safari is completely closed.

Absolutely terrible quality control on Apple's part here. I love the integration of Safari, but my other browsers all work more reliably. Hope 16.2 fixes it.

Well...it appears to be broken in a new way now.

It worked fine until the latest update to Ventura. Venture (13.2) with Safari (16.3) MacBook Air (M2). After a day or so, dragging the tab out of the window simply opens a new blank tab. The original tab remains in the old window.

Same behavior if you drag it to it's own window, or try to drop it in another window...you simply get a new blank tab.

Quitting Safari does not clear the behavior. Clearing history does not reset the behavior. I have to reboot the computer.

Frustrating!

This may have fixed another issue I was having where I would drag a tab out of a window and it would disappear, and sometimes if I dragged it to an existing window with only one tab open, it wouldn't show the tab bar at the top, until I open a new tab in that window... Theres a lot of tab related issues in this update, can't believe it's still not working without doing this weird wonky workaround. But thanks so much for posting the solution, PeterG_, it was driving me bananas.

OMG finally a thread that has the same issue. I have gone back and forth with Apple support, and I was given the answer, wipe your computer to fix it......

I have tried everything, and it drives me insane, I have also noticed large memory leaks in safari. It has been so bad that I have had to use the preview version of the new Safari where this issue appears to be corrected.

I wish apple could speed up bug fixes and stop peddling the classic line of, re-install your OS. It's not an acceptable solution.
