Blurry pics on iPhone 14 Pro Max (iOS 16.0.2)

I just got the new phone few days ago (for the better cameras compared to 13 Pro Max), and surprisingly the pics quality is blurry!

If I use the main camera when choosing 'vivid' mode, after the pic is taken , it takes 3-4 more seconds to do the post-processing! You can see the pic changing contrast, light etc in 2-3 times during that time interval of 3-4 seconds. The result at the end is not as good as I had with 13 Pro Max - which did the processing WHILE taking the pics and not after...

If I chose the 'standard' mode, the pics are better than in vivid mode, but still if you zoom just a little the details get lost! If you dont zoom, some areas of the pic seem clear and others blurry!

I did everything I could do from my side, cleaned the lens, updated to 16.0.2 as I mention in the title and I dont know what else to do :/

Any help on this please?

FIXED IT! (Sort of…)

Basically, two things are at play here:

1) Apples Image Processing (and the QUAD PIXEL sensor technology is mostly at fault.)

2) The way the camera’s are programmed by default.

The first issue is the main root of the problem. The quad pixel sensor technology reduces the amount of resolution depending on how much light is needed on the image. Basically: Low light, sensor clusters pixels together to capture as much light as possible, you end up with at 7MP RAW image from the main camera, as opposed to the 48MP expected resolution (happened to me several times now.)

Here is an example of this issue:

The second issue at fault is that , specially for subjects that are closer than 1ft or so, the native camera app at 1x zoom switches from the main camera, to the ultrawide camera because the main camera can focus that close. It’s not too much of a big deal, since most people shoot subjects further away than 1ft. But it’s good to be aware of that.

To fix it (sort of) you unfortunately have to use a 3rd party app like HALIDE to override the software on the camera module and prevent it from doing the QUAD Pixel rubbish that makes a 48MP sensor output a blurry 7MP image. Even in low light, from my experience, HALIDE still provides better looking pictures, that are actually 48MP.

Hi, i´ve been watching some youtube videos on how to properly use the camera and trying to take better pictures and i think it´s working. I guess the 14 Pro is not an out-of-the-box ready camera experience since it has to be tweaked in some ways to get better results. I´m not saying you guys didn´t try this but for my experience it´s working. The thing i cannot get rid of it´s the over post-processing that kinda ruins the photo, but if we lower the exposure for example it really helps in getting better quality ones, even helps with the blurryness. Maybe this camera has to be treated like a pro one in some level. I still think that for a smartphone this is too much effort at least to take normal day to day pictures. It should have profiles to take common pictures to look great so we don´t have to tweak it every time we take one.

Try this. Watch a bunch of tutorials in Youtube, they are quite a few ones but luckily very short. You might learn something and maybe it´ll help.

If Apple don´t release a fix, maybe this is the fix. Idk.

I hope it helps!

Thanks for raising awareness but it would be better to bring the Redditors here and also ask them to log it as a bug request to the link we gave in the initial comments.

We and the ppl who really find this a problem would better “argue” with Apple here, rather than waste energy with some “Redditors”. Also, not sure if Apple will check and even consider posts out of their forum…

True Tone is a display technology and would have nothing to do with the software processing on the camera. The issue is that this is the first year in a long time that Apple has changed their camera hardware. The software based computational photography has just not caught up. It took google well over a year to adjust their software when they finally upgraded their camera on the pixel. Apple is way more pompous and hasn’t even admitted there is an issue. So I’m imagining it will take a lot longer. The issue is definitely software as I’ve stated because I can fix the blur issues using google photos.

Like I’ve said, you change get a replacement, clean the lens, erase the phone, it’s not going to help. This is a SOFTWARE issue with the computational photography. It’s broken and Apple won’t even acknowledge it. This is why you’re seeing the post processing. The software they are using on all phones now with iOS 16 is borked because they updated the hardware on the 14 pro. We can’t fix it. They have to.

Well I went in to Apple today and they did the usual tests. All hardware was fine. He said “it could be software related and maybe a future update will sort that “. So the guy could see there was an issue and basically said it’s software related. I have now contacted Apple regarding returning the phone but don’t hold out much hope.

anyone compared the 14 Pro/Pro Max against the likes of Pixel 7 pro or S22 Ultra ?

I have the 14 pro max and the pixel 7pro. I prefer my pixel for any portrait shots since their latest update and for any close up pics now that Apple has extended the min focus distance. Also, apples portrait mode ***** if it’s anything but a human. Objects and pets typically look bad. I like my 14 for general outdoor shots but honestly, the pixel looks better for most things. Which ****** me off. If they would get the software issues corrected, this camera (14 pro max) would be great.

I agree. I think there are a set of iPhone 14 Pro Max phones that have bad hardware. I can take a photo of text on a page and only the middle of the photo will have the text in focus. Or two people shoulder to shoulder and one will be out of focus. Or I'll have great detail in the hair but the face looks like watercolor painting.

The other iPhone Pro Max user in the house can take photos that look like the keynote presentation. What gives? The only difference between our phones - silver 512GB Defender Series Pro XT Clear

Black Crystal (Clear/Black) vs space black 256GB Defender Series Pro XT

Black. That's how similar they are and we both use magsafe. He wirelessly charges overnight and uses lignting in the car, I use the lightning.

They shipped from different states when we ordered from Att for launch day. Could it be a different plant got bad parts?

Really falls down to you eco system and/or the need for one. I use an iPhone 14 pro max as my main phone just because my family group of about 14 people all use iPhone. I was on the pixel and messing things up for everyone in the messaging dept. 😂 But I also bought a pixel 7 pro on swappa for about 550 so I could use for photos. Honestly, I like the pixel camera better. Also, Siri is straight up dumb compared to google assistant. But as far as the hardware and the iMessage, it just made life easier with my family. Both great phones though to be honest.

And what I get from it, is that Apple wont fix anything until the new iPhone comes out and introduces some better photo processing with a fancy name (as the guy in the video mentioned) which will make us all to buy iphone 15 eince with the ones that we have, the fix might come maybe in more than a year (much latter than iphone 15)

Have also been so disappointed by the lack of focus and grainy pictures especially indoors. My wife has the 11pro and the pictures are so sharp in comparison. If the hype for upcoming S23 ultra camera proves to be accurate Apple will be in trouble.

Now 9to5Mac is noticing the issue too:
