Blurry pics on iPhone 14 Pro Max (iOS 16.0.2)

I just got the new phone few days ago (for the better cameras compared to 13 Pro Max), and surprisingly the pics quality is blurry!

If I use the main camera when choosing 'vivid' mode, after the pic is taken , it takes 3-4 more seconds to do the post-processing! You can see the pic changing contrast, light etc in 2-3 times during that time interval of 3-4 seconds. The result at the end is not as good as I had with 13 Pro Max - which did the processing WHILE taking the pics and not after...

If I chose the 'standard' mode, the pics are better than in vivid mode, but still if you zoom just a little the details get lost! If you dont zoom, some areas of the pic seem clear and others blurry!

I did everything I could do from my side, cleaned the lens, updated to 16.0.2 as I mention in the title and I dont know what else to do :/

Any help on this please?

FIXED IT! (Sort of…)

Basically, two things are at play here:

1) Apples Image Processing (and the QUAD PIXEL sensor technology is mostly at fault.)

2) The way the camera’s are programmed by default.

The first issue is the main root of the problem. The quad pixel sensor technology reduces the amount of resolution depending on how much light is needed on the image. Basically: Low light, sensor clusters pixels together to capture as much light as possible, you end up with at 7MP RAW image from the main camera, as opposed to the 48MP expected resolution (happened to me several times now.)

Here is an example of this issue:

The second issue at fault is that , specially for subjects that are closer than 1ft or so, the native camera app at 1x zoom switches from the main camera, to the ultrawide camera because the main camera can focus that close. It’s not too much of a big deal, since most people shoot subjects further away than 1ft. But it’s good to be aware of that.

To fix it (sort of) you unfortunately have to use a 3rd party app like HALIDE to override the software on the camera module and prevent it from doing the QUAD Pixel rubbish that makes a 48MP sensor output a blurry 7MP image. Even in low light, from my experience, HALIDE still provides better looking pictures, that are actually 48MP.

Well just had a call with Apple and they refused to look at this thread or even acknowledge the fact other people are having the same issue. We were just to do trouble shooting on my phone as “you can find anything you want on the internet “. How very convenient indeed. Think I will just sell the phone and go buy android. Very poor show from Apple indeed

My daughter took her 14 Pro to the Apple Store. They acknowledged there was an issue and said they are working on a firmware update. They said she wasn’t the first to come in or have it reported. She could wait for the firmware update or have her phone sent in and it would take a couple days to “fix or replace” the camera. She is going back up to school tomorrow so she chose to wait….

I do think its the same song they sing to everyone almost for every issue that doesnt show in their superficial diagnosis!

they told me the same “it could a sw issue and might be fixed jn future ios releases”!

but how it could be fixed if its not acknowledged officially?!

or it wont be acknowledged and fixed in the background and sneakily included in some ios release in the future?!

is this the transparency we deserve for buying a 1600+ device??

We’re all Apple people here right? 😂 I think it’s safe to say this company does not admit anything is ever wrong 😂 they actually told people they were holding their phones wrong. I wouldn’t hold out for any kind of acknowledgment or accountability. That’s not their strong suit. Hopefully just a future update when the 15 pro comes out with better features. I’m still burned by Apple when I bought an iPad 3 which was a pos. The 4 came out like 4 months later to fix the issues and they never acknowledged anything.

Same here. I actually exchanged my first 14pro max because I thought the camera was broken- that’s how bad it is. The replacement 14 pro max is just as bad. Post processing totally changes the photo. The jumpy auto focus lenses switching back and forth all the time is annoying. It will take a good photo in perfect lighting. My 11 Pro Max took better photos overall for sure. Every photo I take with my 14 pro max I have to edit to smooth out the grainy quality. It’s very disappointing for such an expensive phone.

This camera auto focus is annoying. I can’t even scan QR codes half the time because it won’t focus. I went from the XR to the 14 pro max really hoping for an amazing camera and a far superior phone and so far I wish I stuck with my XR longer between the camera issues and the dynamic island randomly jumping around causing pages to scroll up.

Having the same issues. I got a new phone only so that I would have a good camera since I take all of my pictures on my phone, and I am so incredibly disappointed in my 14 pro picture quality. If I do not have strong lighting the pictures are grainy to the point it looks like my old flip phone pictures. Same issue happens when I zoom in. The constant auto focusing is a nightmare and if there is any movement at all I get a blurry picture. If apple can’t fix this they need to offer free trade-ins for all who bought the 14 pro.

Is there nothing that can be done collectively here to force them to acknowledge the issue and guarantee is a fix ? I would be happy to keep hold of my phone if it was being worked on and I knew a fox was coming sooner than later. But if it’s not a priority by Apple then I am afraid the phone will go and I will never buy another

Yes. The magnets in the 14 PM are >>>>stronger than the 13 PM if you watch this video review (which is excellent if you get a working phone - notice his is caseless).

If you skip forward he shows the magnets are strong enough to hold heavy carryon size bag while using scale digital display showing the load.
