Email not sending on iPhone

Hi, I am having a very big problem with the mail app in iOS 16. I have two emails set up and when I reply to a email, it can’t send, it just goes straight to my outbox and a error message says server not found. I tried everything, I looked to see if my server for the emails is turned on and it is and I also re-added my two emails again and it still did not fix the problem. I did not change anything about my two emails since I had iOS 15. In iOS 15, did not have these problems but now I do. This is definitely a iOS 16 problem.

Same thing happened to me. After sending, I was unwittingly tapping Undo Send at bottom of screen by accidentally touching or swiping up to exit before mail had a chance to send. Undo Send option is on by default. There is a minimum 10 second delay to mail actually being sent, even after you hear the whoosh. Go to Mail preferences, scroll down to very bottom > Send > Undo Send Delay > Turn Off or choose 10/20/30 Seconds.

Metro287,

To clarify, are both of your email addresses through the same provider? Knowing that will help work out if contacting your email service provider is the best path forward, or if there are other steps we can recommend.

Also, to confirm, have you updated to iOS 16.1 yet? If not, we recommend backing up and updating as that can help clear up general issues: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Does not work. These 1000$ toys are just not working properly and they are trying to make us believe we are the problem. Just fedup

If you swipe up to kill the mail app when you close it, or tap unsend, you ARE the problem. And you can fix the problem you create by turning off Undo Send Delay in Settings/Mail (at the bottom of the page) then you can fix the problem you are causing. As user juliangallowagain posted.

Just found this thread: I've had the same problem with one of my email system in iPhone's 'Mail' ever since I upgraded to iOS 16.5.1, which simply sends my emails to 'Outbox' and it stays there; I have 'Delay Sending' switched off. I have iOS 16.5.1 on my iPad and the same email system in 'Mail' sends no problem at all, with exactly the same credentials: most odd and REALLY infuriating!

Your issue has nothing to do with the subject of this thread. Your symptom means that the settings for your outgoing mail server are corrupted, or the outgoing password (which may or may not be the same as the incoming) is wrong or missing. If you recently changed your email password you missed the outgoing mail server.

The easiest way to fix it:

  • Go to Settings/Mail/Accounts and tap on the account, then remove it
  • Restart your phone
  • Go to Settings/Mail/Accounts and add the account back

Neither. It is 100% a mail provider problem. I have 7 email accounts, all from different providers, on my iPhone, my iPad and my MacBook Pro. My wife has 2 accounts on her iMac, her iPhone and her iPad. All 9 work perfectly all the time. You can believe whatever you want, but that won’t solve the problem until you consult your ISP’s tech support, or take my advice.

Same here, replying or sending emails, there is the sound as sent, then checking in sent and the email is not there, also the outbox is empty, and also the recipient/s are not receiving the emails.

This is frustrating as there are some important messages that are lost!

The workaround I am using is to put myself in cc. so far is working.. issue is that i do not always remember to do that and long important emails not sent are really upsetting.

PS: as you can read, i am checking if it is sent etc. the app is not closed soon after sending! that's a major bug!

I am going to change app to microsoft. I had this issue last year, then seemed solved and now again.

Hi! I hope I have the answer for all of you. I also have experienced this and have found it very frustrating for I also thought many times that an email has been sent only to find out that it had not been sent days later when I would not receive a reply. And it would only happen when I would reply directly from the email thread. I had no problem sending brand new emails.

Using the advice of some of the answers here, I replied to an email that I had tried to respond to twice and both times it failed to send, and, like everyone else described it seem to have disappeared… not in my “sent” folder, or my outbox. But this time, after sending it and hearing my “sent” tone, I counted to 20 and then checked my “sent” folder, and sure enough this time it actually sent!

So my advice is to try this…. After sending your email, just sit tight don’t touch anything for about 20 seconds and then check your “sent” folder.

With the new 16 iOS update, there is a five second lag between hitting the send on an email and the email actually being sent. When you go back to your email list after hitting send you will see on the very bottom of your iPhone “undo send“. If you don’t know that that is there it’s very easy to hit it and delete or unsend your email

A user I support has a device that is enrolled with MobileIron specifically. It is occurring on their Exchange account that is setup on the native iOS mail client with 16.1.1. We have tried disabling the Undo Send Delay feature last Friday 11/18; that seemed to have resolve the issue but just received a message from the user yesterday 11/20/2022 that he is getting the "Cannot Send Mail - An error occurred while delivering this message," prompt again. This user only has an Exchange account setup within the native iOS mail client.
