iPhone 13 Pro (16) and lightning digital av adapter MD826AM/A - not HDCP compliant?

Hi all,

I have a new just out of the box Lightning Digital AV Adapter and a ten year old Samsung TV which makes no mention of HDCP in its manual. Up until the most recent iOS update, I was able to stream a few movies from Amazon Prime Video but for some reason not downloads. After updating to iOS 16, I continually get HDCP errors. On live shows the ads run with both visual and sound, but the programs only pass through one or the other.

Has anyone noticed new HDCP errors while using the lightning digital av adapter since updating to iOS 16?

Hello pnwforest,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with HDCP. Have you tried restarting your iPhone? Which iOS device are you using? Does this happen when you are using another adapter or cable?

Try the steps listed here to see if this resolves the issue:

"Get help

Find out what to do when you have the following issues.

If you see video but can't hear audio

Make sure that you're using a Digital AV adapter (which has an HDMI port). If you're using a VGA adapter, it doesn't carry audio signals. To hear audio with a VGA adapter, you need to connect to the headset jack on your TV, monitor, projector, or stereo.

If an app doesn't display video or play audio

The app might not be compatible with your adapter. Check compatibility on the app's info page in the App Store or contact the developer.

If an alert says that an HDCP-compatible device is required

Your content might not be compatible with your adapter. Movies, TV shows, and certain streaming video apps require High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). If you try to play these movies, shows, and streaming videos using a non-HDCP digital connection—like the Apple VGA Adapter—an alert will ask for an HDCP-compatible device.

If you need help with other issues

  1. Disconnect and reconnect your adapter from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and from your TV, monitor, or projector.
  2. Make sure that your VGA or HDMI cable works, since the issue could be with the cable.
  3. Remove any VGA or HDMI extension cables or converters. Accessories that convert a VGA or HDMI signals to different video formats (DVI, Composite, Component) aren't compatible.
  4. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.

Yeah, me and my girlfriend have been using the lightning adapter for years, then updating to ios16 it was in a constant state of buffering and no sound. We even went as far to buy a brand new one tonight and it didn’t make a difference. Switched out hdmi cords that I knew worked perfectly fine and still no solution. I plugged in an old iPhone running iOS14 and it worked as intended. It’s the ios16 update.

Thanks KMB_12. Thanks for all your suggestions. Sadly, I have already done all of those things and more. I've also tried the 13 Pro (16) and lightning digital av adapter on a HDCP compliant TV and still get the HDCP error. To be fair, I had not tried it there before the iOS 16 update. But it seems suspiciously like there is an issue with the new iOS and the existing lightning digital av adapters. All of the lightning devices in our household are on the new iOS and I don't have an appetite to roll back the update. But someone needs to confirm if this is now an issue. FWIW, I don't know if the firmware on the lightning digital av adapter is the most current - there does not seem to be a way to trigger a check and update if needed.
