Problems with internet image upload /download on OS 10.11.6? Since about 24 Sept 2022?

I'm running OS 10.11.6 on a Mac Pro 4,1 (2009), because that's the most recent OS release that the computer can run.

Starting about 24 Sept this year, I've been experiencing a range of problems in several apps. The common element is that they all relate to image upload or download across the Net:

  1. In browsers (Safari version 11.1.2 (11605.3.8.1); Firefox 78.15.0esr (64-bit) – again, both the latest runnable releases), pages that serve frequently updated graphics (news sites, Google maps - even Google search because it's configured to offer image 'hits') do not load. They hang. Sometomes, after a wait, reloading the page fixes the problem. More often, it doesn't.
  2. I can no longer to upload photos on my desktop WhatsApp app (Version 2.2236.10) though, fwiw, I can still see and download images sent to me by others fine.
  3. Messages on iMessage that contain images are not sent.
  4. Images embedded in some emails do not download (Mac Mail 9.3–3124), even after hitting ‘load remote content’.

Now, I don't know web architecture or programming from an oak tree, but because (1) this all started happening at the same time, and (2) it's happening in several apps, I wonder whether some widely-used 'module' or whatever it's called in Internet architecture, something that deals with image file transfer, got updated on or around 24 September, and good old El Capitan 10.11.6 either 'didn't get the memo' or just can't be tweaked by Apple to deal with the new protocols.

Does anybody have any idea? I really would like to fix this...

Thanks,

Hello Angus McC,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Let's isolate this a little more. Does the same thing happen while using safe mode:

"Start up your Intel-based Mac in safe mode

  1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
  2. Log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again.

On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar."

More details can be found here: Start up your Mac in safe mode

Let us know the results. Also, can you provide a few more details about what you are experiencing.

Cheers!

Hey Angus McC,

Some other things you can check is for any type of security that may be blocking images.

Do you currently have the computer connected through some sort of VPN? If so, try disabling that, restarting the computer and testing out your images.

Is there any sort of anti-virus or security software installed on the computer? If so, try disabling that.

In System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall, is there any firewalls enabled currently? If so, try disabling that.

If none of these things apply or help, then you'd want to contact Apple to report this issue: Get Support

Cheers!
