iPhone voice to text not working

This happened to me -- my ability to dictate texts stopped working intermittently, then stopped suddenly and completely. I tried to many things and nothing worked. Then, working my way through many troubleshooting tips on another site, it said to check for software updates (General > Software Update). There was an update to download, even though I have Automatic Updates turned on. I updated (to iOS 16.3) and it immediately fixed the problem! 🎉

So I went into settings, and then general, and then keyboard and last, literally turned the enable dictation off and then back to on and it fixed the problem. I know it is ridiculously simple. Just to clarify, it was already on enable dictation but turning it off and then back on again worked for me. Hope it helps

I posted what I thought was a fix (go to enable dictation and turn it off and then back on) but I found that this only works for about 5 minutes and then it shuts off again. Question: do your share a phone plan with someone else? I ask because sometimes my daughter will do something to her phone and it links to my phone. Which is super fun when all of a sudden I get her texts!!! lol. but if she does something to her settings it may reset to mine. I know that sounds nuts but the struggle is real!

I installed a Bluetooth device that made the dictation feature stop working (cell2jack). Once I turn this Bluetooth device off it works. Check the new Bluetooth devices that you installed. This could be the problem.

I found out what was causing mine. It was cell to Jack, which is an external device connected to my iphone that works on Bluetooth. When I turned off that hardware,

then my phone text to voice worked.

Good evening: Since my phone (iPhone 11 Pro Max) was actualized to IOS 17.3 , I have not been able to send voice messages. I use them daily x my work, so this is a very negative situation for me. I agree that instead of blaming users, or giving us directions that don’t fix the problem, I hope that Apple should find a way to FIX IT! There must be a glitch on your IOS 17.3 . I hope someone from APPLE will listen to all your users complains about this subject! Thanks

Yes, yes, yes! I too tried everything short of restoring my iPhone. The thing that fixed it was suggested here.

Installing the Canadian (English) keyboard and deleting the American (English)keyboard. It's WORKING NOW!

14 Pro Max: After updating to 17.4, all speech to text dictation stopped working. I’m visually impaired thusly typing takes strain and effort; this is unsatisfactory. Siri works. I’ve tried every canned response given, and looking through support forums and online there is definitely an issue.

17.3 I noticed speech to text acting iffy, like cutting you off before your done speaking.

BTW, this took me 15 minutes to write, thanks Apple. This Accessibility issue needs to be addressed ASAP. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Yes! Thank you. I'm Canadian now, Eh? Actually, Just deleting the English Keyboard and re-installing fixes the issue as well. But, **** that was a frustrating few days without Speech to Text working. So glad I FINALLY found your post and got it working. I was about to wipe my phone and start over too!

On your phone, go to Settings then Keyboard. Under Keyboard, tap Keyboards. You will see English and Add New Keyboard. Tap Add New Keyboard. Scroll down to English (Canada) and tap it. That's it. Restart your phone and test it out.

Yea mine stopped working a few days ago on my 12. Everything is on it just doesn’t work on any apps for me. Siri works though.

I'm having the same issue with my new iphone13 mini. Voice to text not working (has the 'x' over the microphone) and "hey siri" also not working. Following here...

I am only having issues in my text messaging app. Voice to text works in all other apps. I have followed instructions provided and made sure software was up to date. I have Iphone XR.

Voice to text is completely broken for me after the recent update. I rely on this every day as typing is hard on my hands! Fix this now! I have iPhone XR with iOS 16.0 20A362.
