I'm in nearly the same boat, but I quit 'subscribing' (paying for access) many years ago, tho' not soon enough, since they didn't announce the free version.
But as I see it, our departure hardly adds to their decline. Rather, we reward AOL's bad behavior by quitting them. Isn't that what they want?
As it is, using Apple's Mail.app, I don't have to look at their page ads of dancing monkeys, teens in 'barely there' tops, with flesh hanging out, etc.
But whenever there is a chance to convert some existing contact that was via AOL, it will go to my iCloud account.
One more thing.... FWIW, I only have a problem with my MBP mid-2010, max'd out running High Sierra. My MBP mid-2015, running Big Sur, has not had an issue with the encrypted 'log-in' they now use.
