Creating Apple Mail app password for AOL

Have tried published steps for creating app specific password for AOL on my iPhone. Did this a year or so ago and it worked fine. Now getting message saying “Sorry, this feature is not available right now!”

Does anyone know what’s up with this, and what the current process is? TIA!

AOL support's reply:
Thank you for reaching out. We're very sorry app passwords are unavailable for your account. We don't have an exact ETA on when this will return, but we encourage you to check back in the near future. Rest assured, you can still access your mail from the AOL Mail app or via a web browser. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

We're sorry you're having this difficult experience. We understand your frustration and impatience regarding this matter, however, we currently do not have an ETA for the fix. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

Dear AOL. Thanks for your canned reply. After 25 years of AOL membership, including continuing to actually *pay* you for that privilege (is it anymore?) it is becoming quite clear that you are simply trying to drive people to your own app by refusing to allow passwords for 3rd party mail apps. It is impossible to describe how disappointed I am at this. After 25 years with your service, nearly my entire email life is tied up with AOL. In these inflationary times I can certainly use a pay raise, and dropping AOL is becoming increasingly attractive. It gives me no joy to have to contemplate this, but if AOL doesn't come up with a way to both keep my account secure by changing passwords now and then as well as using my Apple mail app, then I will file for 'divorce,' and bid you goodbye, adding to your decline in the digital world. Please pass this sentiment up your chain of command. It will be a sad parting, but it in a few months it will be a parting if there isn't a solution to this. Thanks for reading.

I'm in nearly the same boat, but I quit 'subscribing' (paying for access) many years ago, tho' not soon enough, since they didn't announce the free version.

But as I see it, our departure hardly adds to their decline. Rather, we reward AOL's bad behavior by quitting them. Isn't that what they want?

As it is, using Apple's Mail.app, I don't have to look at their page ads of dancing monkeys, teens in 'barely there' tops, with flesh hanging out, etc.

But whenever there is a chance to convert some existing contact that was via AOL, it will go to my iCloud account.

One more thing.... FWIW, I only have a problem with my MBP mid-2010, max'd out running High Sierra. My MBP mid-2015, running Big Sur, has not had an issue with the encrypted 'log-in' they now use.
