There are no default DNS settings. When you connect to the internet, your internet gateway will usually setup your DNS as part of the DHCP protocol. In the past, some services would provide flaky DNS servers and people could get better performance by supplying their own, publicly accessible servers like Google's DNS services. But that isn't such a big problem any more.

Your explanation now makes sense given the research I've done. I installed a DNS that apparently is managed by Apple.
