Watch series 3 won’t update software

I updated my iPhone software now my watch will not work without updating. I’ve tried to install the new software but it keeps getting stuck on preparing. If I cancel it resets to factory settings and I can’t access the watch at all. Can anyone help?

Watch update 8.7.1 issue. Just got a watch series 3. When trying to pair it with my iPhone XR it pairs but prompted that a software update is required. I start the update however it gets stuck. It appears that it completes the download however it then goes to “preparing” and gets stuck there. I’ve tried resets, made sure my phone is up to date. Not sure what else to try. Thoughts?

My apple watch series 3 won't update with my iPhone 12 pro. Ive reset watch multiple times. I've deleted and reinstalled my Watch app on phone multiple times. Every time, watch will fail update at various stages in the process. I've gotten as far as "preparing" after update, but then will not proceed and wheel just spins on iPhone, or watch resets with no update and prompt to bring phone near watch to pair. Not sure of WatchOS version because can't access my watch now. iPhone 12 running 15.7.1 and up to date.
