EarPod headphones requiring Bluetooth

I recently received two Apple EarPod headphones as a gift. They are the type with a lightning connection.

When plugged into my iPhone the below card pops up and they must be connected through Bluetooth and the lightning port for them to work.

Are these knockoff EarPods or is this just how they work now?
